About Me

Too Poor For 78704
Oh 78704, how you've changed. And not necessarily for the better.
I'm a native Austinite. I rented in South Austin for 15 of my adult years, then moved to California for a while. Apparently while I was gone, half of California moved to 78704. When I returned I was disappointed to find I couldn't afford my old neighborhoods anymore.
There is a giant McVilla next door to the little bungalow I last rented on Ethel Street. My old Annie Street clapboard is appraised at $348,000. And the Wilson Street bungalow court where I buried my favorite cat is crumbling to bits. (Thanks Mitch Ely, thanks a lot.)
I ended up buying a house in 78745, expecting it to be a temporary suburban exile. Turns out, there's a ton of us down here and the -45 is getting better all the time.
So I put a bumper sticker on my car to say not only am I inspired by the potential of 78745, but I'm annoyed that 78704 has become so unaffordable.
The sticker says "78745 -- When you're priced out of 78704."
I'm not selling the stickers anymore, but I still appreciate hearing from anyone who gets the joke and shares the sentiment!

Austin Condo Collapse Looks Likely to Me
