Trinidadian born Gail Ward is no stranger to change and taking risks. She takes a “novel†approach to life and art. “My parents always said, life should read like a novel…no one wants to read one chapter…make it interesting!†Interesting it has been indeed. From dancer, choreographer and actor, to music executive, performance artist and painter. Change and movement is something she not only welcomes, but actively seeks out.
Gail started painting five years ago when a dream inspired her to try and physically touch her self. “I kept trying to see myself…my real self …mirrors lie, they lack dimension. I wanted to have a more accurate picture of what I look like, so I started using paint to make prints of myself, but that didn’t seem accurate either…the images continued to change. Much to my surprise it turned out to be more accurate in the ways that really mattered…I started seeing colors, patterns and symbols that were more accurate about the core of me than any mirror or photo could possible capture…I started seeing the colors, patterns and symbols of my spirit.†It was very healing.â€
What came out of that experiment was her making prints of other people and using words that she had written to express what the images were reflecting. Gail starting including recycled materials (glass, wood, antique window frames, amongst other things). Inanimate objects that were once another’s trash became treasures, converging textures, combining past and present bringing back some of the flavors of her heritage, each piece taking shape to tell their own special story.
“I don’t label myself as a painter or anything else, that becomes too limiting and carries too much weight for anyone to really bear and still have the ability to move forward into discovering new and sometimes hidden things about themselves, other people and the world. We are each our own uncharted territories. I am very humbled by the fact that my work can inspire people to engage, think, laugh and feel. It excites me to enable others to see their own stories in colors, patterns and texturesâ€!
What’s next?... She has recently founded Little Red Hen Productions, a multimedia production company dedicated to the expansion of female artists and art of all genres. “I intend to continue to evolve and contribute in my unique way whatever I can on this crazy and wondrous journey called life and when my time here is completed I want my book to have some really great stories and lessons of a life well lived. I will keep writing with the intent that it will make a really interesting readâ€.
