About Me

Charlie Lancaster- Drummer/Percussionist. I'm a "First-call" musician in the Central Ohio area. I started playing at the age of 10 with weekly public school lessons in drums and percussion. At age 12 I began taking lessons five days a week including summer lessons. At age 13 my music teacher insisted that I increase my studies by adding private lessons, this lead to me adding weekly lessons with two different private instructors. By the time I graduated from High School I had mastered drums and percussion as well as completing studies in music theory, composition, and performance. I am currently studying Implied Metric Modulation and advanced exercises by drummers such as John Riley, David Garibaldi, and Billy Ward. I have performed and recorded with every conceiveable combination of musicians, from acoustic duos and orchestras to rock bands and samba bateristas. Due to my extensive musical background, I don't have a particular style. The best way to describe my approach is to say that I "play for the song". This is done by listening to the song a few times, studying the composition of the song, and then determining what drum and percussion parts the song requires. This is similar to the approach that songwriters and studio musicians use when crafting songs.Current projects: Resolve To See- This is a christian/inspirational rock band that plays mostly cover songs with the occasional original written by Dave Walters(bass, vocals). The material ranges from Count Basie to Jack Johnson. The Flimflam Boys- Acoustic duo consisting of Sam Stafford(bass player for Yekrats) on guitar, piano, vocals, and harmonica and myself playing percussion. Sam is a multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter who performs both originals and covers, his style is diverse and at times quirky. I use a minimalist percussion(no drum set) approach with this project. On one song I will play a Djembe, on the next I might play a shaker, tamborine, woodblock, and cowbell. Yekrats- Yekrats is a regional four-piece original music band. Their style has been described as "acoustic, alternative rock". My approach to this project is to provide a solid rhythm foundation and at the same time play off of and syncopate with the different instruments and vocals. I also work with local musicians, encouraging them and helping them develop their own style.Lessons- I teach private lessons on drums, percussion, and hand drums. For more information, see my lessons blog.
