With wild abandon and unrelenting passion, Edmonton’s Keep 6 emerges out of the economic and musical hotbed of Western Canada. This four-piece progressive rock ensemble, bent on making a big noise, is steadily gaining recognition for their intense songwriting, inspired, tight live performance and the ability to translate that live energy onto disc.
Self described as “an ongoing experiment examining the juxtaposition of pure thought and unbridled emotionâ€, their music explores the boundaries of what some consider conventional while challenging listeners to envelope themselves in a lyrical journey of observation often delving into the dark side of the human condition. Riveting guitar, powerhouse drumming and driving bass riffs combined with soaring vocal melodies converge in a maelstrom of sonic rapture designed to shake the senses, spur the imagination and maybe even touch the soul.
Evolving from a collaboration between long time friends guitarist Scott Chalmers and drummer Jay May, the duo connected with bassist Matthew Dean W. in mid 2005 and began relentlessly pounding out material with their distinctive, collective slant. As things locked together instrumentally, fledgling lead singer and lyricist Shorre McColman, a product of exposure to everything from punk to prog to pirate metal, became the final element of a surreptitious musical fusion begging to be explored.
The result is an abomination of over three decades of hard and heavy musical influences encompassing the talents of current faves: Dream Theatre, System of a Down, Avenged Sevenfold and Coheed and Cambria, winding back through distinctive trend setting rock bands the likes of Soundgarden and Sabbath. From Rush to Zeppelin, Pantera to the Police, Megadeth to Mars Volta and all points between, the Keep6 sound is both epic yet familiar, cerebral yet compassionate, magical yet grounded.
The 2007 release of the debut CD “Humanifesto†has this driven young band delivering their infectious, organic, anthemic, aggressive/progressive style and no holds barred approach to crafting songs to an ever expanding fan base throughout Canada and beyond.
The evolution continues…
