DJ Señor 45 (Peter Tünnessen), specialist for Rare Grooves,
compiled the first compilation with original german commercial music of the
60s and 70s in 1999.
'Popshopping Vol.1' was very successful, even internationally.
The follow up, equally successful, was 'Popshopping Vol. 2',
as well as the Remix-EP 'Popshopping Mixed Up' (all 3 on Crippled Dick Hot Wax ),
for which Señor 45 teamed up with DJ and producer Mr. Alfa (Alfa Kay)
to create a remix of the all time commercial classic 'Moulinex'.
The Popshoppers were born: Señor 45 & Mr. Alfa took to refurbish
old commercial music, a part of the pop culture which no one paid attention
to so far. They decided to produce and to compose the appropriate music from
this affectionate ironic point of view.
The debut-album 'Popshoppers' Shopping Guide' ( Diggler Records , 2003
and also released in Korea by Feel Music, 2006)
With the album 'Popshoppers' Shopping Guide', which is their
debut as composers, the Popshoppers present luscious music for imaginary commercials
and products in the style and sound of the 1960s and 70s.
Musically the Popshoppers stroll between the pop-eras, quoting Beat, Jazz,
Surf, Bossa, Latin, French Pop, Disco, Rap and Easy Listening.
They take up the naive humour and the blatant joy of consumption of old
commercials and use it as a topic for their songs.
Most of the instruments are played by the Popshoppers themselves, additional
instruments were played by outstanding guest musicians.
Working with the 80 years old german Pop legend Botho Lucas (the Popshoppers
wanted to pay homage to), they got the idea to invite more celebrities for
singing and speaking parts. Fortunately all of them joined in.
An unique group of guests out of the show- and music business are participating
in this project as singers, speakers or musicians:
German advertising legend 'Mr. Afri Cola' Charles Wilp, Rocko Schamoni, Motorpsycho
(from Norway), Anke Engelke, Götz Alsmann, Helge Schneider, Egon Hoegen,
Bastian Pastewka, Suzie Kerstgens from KLEE and many more.
The original german commercial music of the 1960s and 70s (how documented
by the Popshopping-Compilations) gains its attraction clearly from the fact
that the composers tried to adapt styles of music which were hip at that time.
That lead (intentional or unintentional) to a very continental European pop
music.
It was typical for the commercial music of that time, that a lot of tracks
were instrumentals, produced as a soundtrack to the product. Some slogans
were dropped from time to time, or they were placed on the beginning or the
end of the track.
The Popshoppers took up this principle: Half of the songs have complete
lyrics like a pop song, the other half are instrumentals with slogans on
the beginning or during the track.

The second album 'At The Discotheque' ( Diggler Records , 2006)
The Popshoppers came back with another conceptual album. This time it is
not about the colourful world of advertisement as in their debut, but rather
the discotheque the Club - the place of yearning, reflection of the world
and where wishes come true.
Well suited to this subject, the Popshoppers juggle with dance genres by
mixing disco, soul, funk, jazz, house, electro, gospel and latin elements.
Two sensational singers bring life to the female vocals: Suzie Kerstgens,
front woman of german popband KLEE and Janea, singer of Son De La Goutte.
Señor 45 and Mr. Alfa sing the male parts. And, of course, singer
Citronic (Citron) once again adds a very charming song to the album.
Almost all the lyrics are written in German or in the typical German-English-French-Spanish
Pop-Esperanto: The album features themes such as flirtation on the dance floor
(Tanzfläche, dance floor), musical impressions of a journey (New World
Travels) or exotic love affairs (Ich will zurück nach Reykjavik, I want
to go back to Reykjavik). The Popshoppers even out themselves as a sort of
Pop-Sect (We are the Popshoppers) and they are willing to make remarkable
confessions in their songs: Ich will aussehen wie Cher (I want to look like
Cher). Ich wünschte, sie nennen einen Club nach mir (I wished they called
a club after me) or Es gibt nichts auf dem Planeten, was ich nicht trinken
kann (There is nothing on this planet which I cannot drink).
David Bowies Heroes is included as a cover version in German (Helden) and
re-made in the typical Popshoppers-style. This song is also their first single
release from this album.
