Stephen King is a solid writer (and perhaps my fav), but he disappointed me with the wrap up of the Dark Tower series. Anne Rice is decent, and so is Clive Barker (for some reason [i'm a moron] all those gay themes in his book didn't take away from my surprise in hearing he's gay). While the Lord of the Rings is great, Stephen R. Donaldson's The Thomas Covenant Chronicles is more compelling and perhaps better written (although less consistent and organized). And why is the Last Chronicles 4 books spaced out each by 3 years! Oh, and don't dismiss L. Ron Hubbard's Battlefield Earth novel because of the shitty movie or the scientology nuts out there. It's an excellent piece of sci-fi story-telling.
