Jamie Knight & the acoustic tree

About Me

Jamie Knight and Simon Othen have been developing as a duo since the start of 2008 and because they enjoy many musical styles as influences, they are able to take the maturing songwriting of Jamie Knight in its most suitable direction, be it bluegrass, blues, soul-wherever! With this in mind you may expect their set to sound like an i-pods random mode, but with the passionate vocal delivery of Jamie and the unique style of Simon's playing, they have something which is rare these days- their own sound! With a blend of acoustic instruments of guitars, mandolin, baritone guitar, and now the wonderful cello playing of Catherine Oldham whom seems to effortlessly add a further dimension to the music of 'The Acoustic Tree'-roots music at its best.

The sessions for this EP took place at ffg studios, near Tewkesbury on Sunday 25th January 2009.Jamie Knight was set up in the acoustically dry vocal room, and used his Canadian Larrive acoustic guitar, which is made from Hawaiian Koa wood. The band performed the songs 'live', playing all together, with Jamie singing the main vocal line. In order to keep the sound of his guitar separate from the vocal, a SE Reflexion Filter was used as a screen between the vocal mic and the guitar. The only overdubs were the backing vocal parts, performed by all three after the initial recording of the songs.Catherine Oldham played her cello, which is believed to be French and to date from the 1830's, in the live acoustic of the Cotswold Stone room. The room adds depth and warmth to the sound of the cello.Simon Othen was set up in the small booth between the live room and the control room of the studio. He played a Brook Baritone acoustic guitar in Nashville tuning, tuned to A, as well as a Lowden F32c, tuned either in standard or dropped-D tuning. All guitars used Newtone strings. All the rooms connect with glass doors, to allow the band to see each others' visual cues. The session was recorded by David Pickering Pick, owner of ffg, using SE, AKG and Audio-Technica mics, through Focusrite ISA mic preamps. Recording and mixing was carried out in Nuendo 4 running on an 8-core Apple Mac, with Waves and UAD compressors and EQ, and Altiverb and EMT 140 plate reverbs. The recording and mixing was monitored on ATC SCM150A active speakers.
