I started out as a busker on The London Underground far too many years ago to admit to, progressed on to performing in the now legendary (apparantly) all girl bands The Brendas and The Well Oiled Sisters on the London pub and gay scene. We toured with the inimitable Morrissey, I went mad, went travelling, had a sexuality crisis, came back and did the 9 to 5 grind as an occupational therapist at The Homerton Hospital and have now returned to my roots as an acoustic performer. If you would like to hear my music, which is all original and not your run-of-the-mill anything, go to my website janealston.com
I have returned to my radio show An Hour With Jane online at www.skfm.org.uk every Friday between 12 and 2 PM GMT. 87.7 FM in August. I play an ecclectic mix of Motown, Indie, The Smiths, Classical, Soul and anything else I find in my record collection. I also have live sessions, playing live on air myself and having guests. My songs have been described as being about "life on the edge". Well, that's one way of putting it. The greatest compliment I have ever had was from a woman in a hostel in Loas who heard me singing late at night and thought she was listening to an angel. I have completed an acoustic album called "If This is a Story", which we're now remixing in a decent studio as it was recorded more or less live in various living rooms and mixed on digital 8 track. The tracks on my website and myspace are the results so far. I'm also going to begin recording a second album as soon as I have taught Paula and Tom all the new stuff. I recently ruined my chances of being taken seriously by the head of EMI by informing him I thought music should be free. Download at your will. I have performed before many thousands and I've played in dingy pubs with punters falling asleep over their pints, and now I rarely perform at all. I'm up for singing on other people's stuff, collaborating and doing session work so contact me if you like my voice and want it on your track. I'm working on getting over the stage fright I developed after having done way too many drugs and ending up in a psychiatric ward, so far got as far as some open mikes in London and Harrogate. The sky didn't fall down and it was OK. A youtube performance has given me the perfect get out clause re the audience/stage fright problem. See below. Also is a track by UK rapper McNi, on which i guest as vocalist, and I helped in the filming/performing of the video. Also is a very funny clip of me losing it at a set of traffic lights. Enjoy, please. xxx Jane
