Born 15 September 1956, Jaki got her musical start as a singer in the band Ferrari before moving on to perform with the band Medium Wave. After performing backing vocals for the acclaimed reggae band UB40, she was discovered and signed to EMI Records.
Her albums Heaven Knows and Breaking Away spawned numerous UK top 40 hits, including "Round and Round," "Set Me Free," "Breaking Away," "Step Right Up," "Could It Be I'm Falling In Love," and "Mated" (the latter two which were duets with former Linx vocalist and recent Fame Academy vocal coach David Grant). She continued recording into the late 80s and 90s, releasing the albums From Now On and Real Life. She eventually made her stateside mark with a remake of Chaka Khan's "Ain't Nobody" which soared to the top spot on the Billboard Dance Chart and also reached top 20 status in the the American Black Entertainment Video Charts. She has also found success with her records in Japan.
Jaki enjoyed her greatest commercial success in the mid-1980s; however, her musical influence has been a lasting one and she continues to inspire up-and-coming vocalists. Most recently, Jaki appeared on the tv show Hit Me Baby 1 More Time where she performed her top 10 smash "Set Me Free" in competition to benefit her chosen charity. She continues to tour, performing her numerous hits as well as selections from the Motown songbook.
