$50 FOR A SLAP ❒ Man charges fee to be beatenThe police say they are extremely concerned about the health of an individual who has been travelling around sections of the Corporate Area and allowing persons to beat him for a fee.Detective Constable Phillip Lawrence of the Area Four police told THE WEEKEND STAR that the police became aware of the individual and his 'weird' service after someone witnessed a student hitting him across the chest with a piece of board."About two weeks ago, a woman with whom I was having a conversation told me that while driving along Old Hope Road, a few minutes before, she saw a group of students, one armed with a piece of board, beating a man," the detective told THE WEEKEND STAR.

Cops alerted again According to the policeman, a few days later they were again alerted and subsequent checks revealed that the students were paying the man to hit him."After hearing that the students were beating another grown man, we made some checks. We visited the area and saw students and queried what occurred. This is when we heard what the man was doing. They call him 'Beating Stick'," he explained.Though THE WEEKEND STAR was unable to locate Beating Stick, statements from students in the Corporate Area as well as other persons, including vendors, help to tell a funny yet sad tale. The man is described as a tall, dark-skinned man who always sports a black tam. He is also said to have a scar under one of his eyes. One group of students boasted to THE WEEKEND STAR that they were the first to solicit Beating Stick's services almost three weeks ago."Di group a wi tek bus togeda, so one day wi deh a di bus stop and a likkle man jus' walk up and start talk to wi. At first wi tink seh a something him a go beg, but him neva do dat. Him did have a piece a board inna him hand and him ask if none a wi woulda gi him $50 an' him mek wi lick him wid di board," the student said."Di whole a wi seh wi woulda do it 'cause wi tink a joke but him jus' gi one a wi di board and seh a serious ting eno. So di yute gi him $50 and him jus' push up him chest and mek di yute gi him a big lick," the student said while his friends laughed uncontrollably. He added; "... all me pay mi money an' gi him a one lick to."Another student was quick to state his intention if he gets the chance to meet Beating Stick. "Me have five bills weh mi save up fi him. Yu know how hard mi work fi save da money deh? A tru yu nuh know how I well waa meet him. Wait til a see him. Five bills a 10 lick nuh so?"But it's not only students who have been using Beating Stick's services. According to some Half-Way Tree vendors, the man has visited the area on numerous occasions and has been the centre of attraction."... One day mi deh yah an' si a big crowd near di transport centre. When mi run go look, mi si a man inna di middle a di crowd a tek money from some man an' a mek dem lick him wid piece a board," the vendor said before adding "about two to three time mi see him a get lick and mi know him soon come back 'cause people all a save up money fi him."Several of the persons with whom THE STAR spoke insisted that the man is not of an unsound mind. "Some people think him mad, but if yu hear him talk it obvious seh him nuh mad ... No mad man can't reason like how him reason, is jus' a man weh will go to di extreme fi money," a vendor said.

.. ENTERTAINMENT NEWS - SUS..TELL MI BOUT THE DUPPY DEM...DUPPY WAGES WARResidents of a section of Old Harbour Bay, St. Catherine, lined the streets and burned incense and myrrh in a desperate effort to chase away a duppy they say has been haunting them.'Duppy Derrick' has been slamming doors and throwing fans and other objects in one house, and has also tried to scare several residents in the normally quiet fishing village known as Panton Town. The residents say that 'Derrick' claims he was sent from McCook's Pen, and has come for his woman and his little boy and will not leave until he gets them. When THE PRESS visited the house where the alleged duppy sightings took place, one woman, Dianne, who claims she had to be taken to a church so that the ghost could be exorcised, told THE PRESS of her encounter."Is I it happen to ennuh sah. Monday mawnin about four o'clock, mi go 'roun a di back cause mi 'ear seh one duppy roun deh, mi jus feel wen mi bady start jerk and mi feel totally different," said Dianne, who had gone to the house out of curiosity, after hearing about the ghost. For the owner of the house, however, it is a different story. She said that the ghost claims that she looks like his woman and has been haunting her as a result."Him determine seh him naw lef yah but mi naw come outta mi house gi im. Dats why wi a burn fire wid pepper, incense and myrrh," said the owner, who spoke to THE PRESS on condition of anonymity.Another resident, Mark Tyson, said the duppy's scaring tactics have stretched much further than the house."Last night im throw sand inna one woman eye an start stink up di place but wi naw leave," he said.It is said that Derrick claims that the residents are too 'faas' and he is going to teach them a lesson. As the antics of Derrick transform the sleepy fishing village, several persons have been quivering in fear when night falls, while others are excited about the prospect of entertainment from the ghost's various activities.READ MORE BOUT DUPPY DERRICKNow I was warned long before I ever showed up there, that there was a duppy on the loose in Panton Town, St. Catherine. And one cantankerous duppy he is indeed!Derrick the duppy showed up about a week ago and has been going around picking fights with residents and throwing sand into people's eyes. I was warned that the duppy didn't like nosy outsiders asking questions about him and was urged to be prepared for the worst.Fully preparedSo when photographer and I turned up in the modest fishing village recently, I felt that I was fully prepared, come what may. Now, I would be telling a lie if I said that at the first sign of a tree branch swaying in the wind I didn't feel my knees about to give in. Luckily for me, however, I managed to stay upright long enough for the chubby woman with an impeccable weave standing in front of me to explain what was taking place in Panton Town."Mi friend, mi a tell you dat is pure tings a gwaan. Dem say is two duppy around here. From dem come around here dem nuh stop cause trouble," the woman said, her eyes wide. She said her name was Milly and explained that she hadn't seen any of the duppies herself, having taken great care to avoid them."Mi nuh ramp fi chuck off under di bed when night come! Me fi go make duppy hold me? You mad?" she said.As residents tell it, there are two duppies in Panton Town. One is Derrick, who is the ghost of a man who lived in nearby McCooks Pen a few years ago. Now, back when he was living, Derrick had a friend named Dread who lived in Panton Town."Di two of dem would come here and burn chalice more time. Dread dead di other day so fi him duppy come back to where him live, but it look like Derrick duppy lost and just follow Dread own," one woman said.Milly explained what Derrick's first appearance in the community was like. "One man go home and see di duppy take seat pon him verandah. Yes man, di duppy sit down a cut him ten! When di man shout and tell di duppy fi move, di duppy shout afta him and run him weh!" Milly said, looking astonished."Him go inna people house and mash up dem furniture and him throw sand inna one old woman eye. Anybody him see, him cuss dem off," the woman continued. So with two rogue duppies on the loose, wreaking havoc in the community, the residents turned to their last hope, the local madda woman."We call har in and she set fi dem last night. She come wid har fire and har holy water and ketch one of di duppy and put it inna one bottle," Milly said. One piece a sintingShe explained that the madda woman came fully prepared with incense and myrrh and set small fires around the houses in the community. "It was one piece a sinting in yah di other day. People come down here like seh is a stage show a keep. Big crowd, everybody want to see di duppy," she said.Eventually, after chanting a few Psalms and sprinkling the contents of a few bottles, the madda woman managed to capture one of the duppies and took it away in a tiny bottle."She never tell us is which one of the duppy dem she ketch. From she do it we nuh see back nuh duppy so we a hope seh it done now," Milly said.So the residents of Panton Town, that once-quiet fishing village just outside of Old Harbour Bay, now rest a bit easier at night, but are always on the lookout for the return of duppy Derrick or his good friend Dread
