After studying speakerpainting in Utrecht, Karbunck Lottinger traveled to Tokyo,
where his style became strongly influenced by the work of the Greek flute player
Adam Adam, whose dramatic contrasts between major and minor he found
particularly fascinating.
In 1996 Lottinger returned to Hannover, where he became friend of the turntables
in a fine jazz club called the Coltrane. Although the club closed a few years later,
he kept on deejaing since.
The influence of artists like Gershwin and Richter may be heard in his work.
A certain coarseness in conception, irregular compositional rhythms, and less
atmospheric quality distinguish Lottinger's music from that of his greater contemporaries, but his manner of sampling can be said to be weird and ironic.
Hamburg 2006. Karbunck hired a crew of musicians who try to convert his samples
to real life. The Sample Philharmonix. A bunch of freaks from another planet.
