People be talkin' smack!
"This guy is as well rounded as artists get. His sound is a unique blend of unfiltered pop, 1940s jazz and harmonic brilliance that can only be defined as "smart pop." It is clear that playing the piano is second nature to Max -- like blinking or breathing -- which is something you rarely see from musicians anymore. Then again, he isn't part of the mass commercialism machine we have all grown to rely on." - New York Post
"He has a unique style that is something like Regina Spektor’s music mixed with Patrick Wolf’s vocals. The true artistry of Max though, lies in his original compositions such as on the uplifting and enchanting “When Your Body Breaksâ€. The track shows that beyond a great voice and some impressive musical ability, Max Vernon has some songwriting genius in him." - Music for Kids Who Can't Read Good.
"Max Vernon has a vocal instrument that is deep and resonating, its clear tonality has reach and depth of maturity. With a signature voice he delivers piano driven melodies with a broad lyrical palette of intelligence. At twenty years old he composes music that can move in many ways like the Woody Guthrie of Pop to make a bold comparison." - Obsession Collection Music.
"There's something about Max Vernon. He's got the quirk factor mixed in with a heavyweight songwriting style that strikes a curious chord in me. At first when I heard his stuff, I didn't quite get it. But then I couldn't quite ignore it either. But what I do know is that "When Your Body Breaks" is just magical." - Electroqueer
"One of the best covers of 2008: I Kissed a Girl" - Pretty Much Amazing.
"Best cover of 2008: I Kissed a Girl" - Coverville.
At age five, Max Vernon was politely asked to leave his hippy New York pre-school, Rudolph Steiner, for repeatedly questioning the plot of See Spot Run during story hour. This early disillusionment no doubt left its mark on the impressionable young boy: by age nine, he was already leading a turbulent double life filled with drugs, sex, and Joni Mitchell cds. After selling enough crack rocks to buy a piano, Max soon realized his affinity with the instrument and decided to craft a few songs, which followed the spirit of his original infantile question: Why are we doing this? …A question that is now more important than ever.
Despite continued FBI surveillance, Max Vernon’s songs have seduced and tongue kissed the internet, getting write ups in 20+ blogs, new york magazine, ny post, metroweekly, toronto star, paste mag, rolling stone online, etc. Additionally his doo-wop reinterpretation of Katy Perry was licensed to a compilation along with Kaki King, My Brightest Diamond, Matt Pond PA, Frightened Rabbit, Jukebox the Ghost, etc., and is currently on rotation at nearly 100 colleges around the country.
He has read Machiavelli and would someday like to be a Philosopher King or Supreme Court Justice…
In the meantime however, he will continue to sublimate his sexual constipation into writing his unique brand of neurotic, ragtimey-pop songs that are like "too wordy and shit".
