The band that started gigging together as teenagers in Upstate New York has evolved into the Nashville 3-piece that plays songs that remain true to the members’ origins and travels through modern life. As the members wade through their diverse tastes, SGB can best relate their approach to the organic live appeal of Jimi Hendrix's "Band of Gypsys," the honesty of Jeff Buckley, and the lyrical, rhythmic, and melodic depth of new "Kings X." The music is driven radio-friendly rock, backed with punchy guitars, excited drums, and heart-on-the-stage vocals. The Combination of Passion and Intellectual CuriosityAfter forming in junior high school, SGB has continuously drawn from their creative and life experiences to develop their unique sound. In college, the guys pursued their various intellectual paths while performing covers in the Upstate New York college scene. Shaun followed his love of discovering the roots of the human condition and studied social work. His fascination of the inner workings of human nature feeds his candid and introspective lyrics. Shaun describes his songwriting style as “I have bigger fish to fry when I am writing music than preaching or bragging... This music is personally exploratory because I know no other way of doing it.†Andrew studied Jazz Performance and Ethnomusicology in college. During this time he was heavily influenced by the time he spent in India studying South Indian Classical music. He also discovered his interest in improvisation and experimental musical approaches. Dan enhanced his love of music through studying guitar performance and recording techniques. During these years, Dan dove head first into classical guitar, giving him another dimension to his dirty rock style.SGB, Past, Present and Future
After graduating in 1999, the band took off for Nashville TN to become part of and learn from the city's internationally recognized music community. "We have survived adolescence, college, relocating, years of living together, relationship chaos, stolen gear, rejection, numerous day jobs, hundreds of shows…it’s the way we live. I can't remember not being psyched about what we're doing,†says Andrew.Out of this move to Nashville came the name "Second Generation of Blue." Dan states, "Basically, it's about not learning from what has brought pervious generations heartache. We like to leave the concept wide open because we all have these tendencies in different ways."Essentially...In a world of thick music production, Second Generation of Blue believes that the strongest foundation for good music… is good music. Their sound is earthy, unapologetic, and stripped down giving further notice to the bands street level yet “party-hosting†attitude. “We give audiences a good time, while keeping it honest… honesty is key†says Andrew. It is this multi-faceted approach, which blends to form the realistic sounds that are quickly becoming recognized as Second Generation of Blue. The band has been performing steadily in Nashville, demonstrating their commitment to songwriting and performing skills. Their characteristic approach and blatant honesty offer a sense of belonging to those of us who love genuine rock music.
