Review Written by Gerald Van Waes:Yealand Redmayne (UK,2007)***°

The duo Yealand Redmayne was shortlived, but I insisted the singer, Laura Hulse, that this project shouldn’t be forgotten, because this worked quite well, as a duo with Laura Hulse on vocals and Paul Micklethwaite on acoustic guitar.

I only have these four demo tracks and I’m not sure what else there was recorded. Despite whatever reason caused the end of the group*, I think the guitar compositions fitted perfectly with Laura’s high tuned slightly eerie voice. Only one traditional was interpreted: “Scarborough Fair”, with slight variations in singing, wide-sky open, and with fingerpickings. The next track is the transmissions of a poem : “Damon the Mower” by Andrew Marvell, with dreaming- over-the-land vocals, resuming in feelings and thoughts, and on “Into the Light” with a slightly saddened beauty....

Laura Hulse was born in Cumbria, England. She started singing along with her mother who taught her hymns and rural folk songs. From an early age she could be found transcribing many poems and lyrics, snatched from the air on walks by the beautiful Kent Estuary.

Her first appearance as a folk singer was at a school concert, accompanied by Ian Carr (of the Kate Rusby Band and Namo). Ian played her Abyssinians (1983), by June Tabor… which made a huge impression.

After a brief spell as a librarian and radical book seller, hanging out in Newcastle and having lots of adventures, she headed south to art college in Bath and subsequently exhibited lots of videos and live performances, inspired by her family history and the English Lake District.

In London, she received her MA in Fine Art from Middlesex University and took a studio on Eel Pie Island in Twickenham. After a while, she gave up the studio and took up gardening, on a council allotment. She grows vegetables, fruit and flowers.

Until recently, she was the singer with folk duo 'Yealand Redmayne'. Yealand Redmayne disbanded in November 2007. She has now just started her first solo project called November Song. More about that later.

*"Paul left abruptly. He never really explained why, but I have recently discovered he is working in China - so perhaps that explains it!" LH

Sounds Like: Pure and simple

The simplest of mixtures are often the best and that's exactly what Yealand Redmayne has – a simple recipe that performs incredibly well. That doesn't equate simple with undemanding - it implies a cleanliness and purity that is increasingly hard to find in today's folk music.

The strings from Paul Micklethwaite weave understated magic and then Laura Hulse joins in with her slightly ethereal, delicate vocals and you're enchanted. Paul has a sensitive yet assured touch on the strings - a touch that delivers a pure precise sound to blend with Laura's elegant voice.

'Stand Still and Fly' is one of those songs that is just beautiful. This is not background music, it's a track to concentrate on and listen to the words: "Vapour trails of memory. Violet clouds drift in emerald skies. Three silver moons rotate reflect in my eyes." Marvellous stuff – designed to take you away to the land of Yealand Redmayne. 'When A Knight' is another precious jewel – and my favourite. The storytelling folk song is always one of my favourites and the harmony between voice and guitar in this song is flawless. It takes a fair amount of courage to delve into 'Scarborough Fair' (there are many good and equally many ropey versions about) no problems here. Laura's voice takes an edge that lifts the song above many other variations.

Yealand Redmayne has achieved a fusion that begs to be laid down on a CD with a few more songs to add to this simple delight – soon please.
