About Me

WELCOME TO THE DAMN FRONTIER All material and songs written by Jim Smith, who is currently in three other bands and they are... the AMERICAN CHEESE TRIO, EARL CAN BIRD and T-BONE STONE and the LAZY BOYS... I reside in New Orleans...Originally moved to NOLA as an award winning illustator and graphic-designer. Started my own business with other artists and writers. Did the cover art for Off-Beat Magazine for nine months - As well as artwork for the NOLA Chamber of Commerce, Dave Bartholomew and more... Also did comics for a fanzine called Sub-Human...edited and written by mad genius Cecil Doyle. AND THEN!!!! The music bug jumped right up and bit me...I had the good fortune to meet Bobby Lewis (Little Freddie King) and he showed me how to take the five minutes of cool harp stuff that I could play and turn it into hours. And then for practice I worked in the French Market selling harmonicas and harmonica kits, blues tapes etc. (sold Steve Tyler a ton of stuff one day, no discount! )...Played the streets off and on for a couple of years, still do once in a while...AND Eric Clapton doesn't tip...hmmm, where was I...first stage appearance was at the Maple Leaf, scared to death...sucked. GET IT!!! Ha I love that one; but seriously, Bobby was the one that got me up there and afterwards he says "..now Jim, don't get me wrong, you played good, but you were like a little boy with his first woman, you got to slow down...take your time..." perfect advice for all musicians I think. Hung out with more and more low-lifes like myself, taught myself guitar and now here we are 15 years later...I've had some accolades, good reviews, been nominated for awards...haven't won...been wined, been dined...people gonna make me rich!!! Well, I'm not rich, but I'm not poor either...I'm terrible at marketing myself, but I'm starting to get it in my head that I'm gonna have to learn...So if you got to this point of this bio, you've beaten the odds, most people see all those words and get scared...you're supposed to do a short, to the point bio...according to all reports that is.
