Most everyone came from, or are still with, other normally functioning bands that write music, have regular rehearsals and make records which are consumed by the public. Things started out for the Handles by sporadically jumping on other peoples equipment at a long-held, shared rehearsal space in Chatsworth, CA whenever everyone happened to be there. Nothing was, or has ever since, been worked out musically. Pretense is thrown out the window and the room allowed to "write" the material on the spot, often recorded but never to be performed again. Sometime in 2003, an oddly shaped makeshift 6-color screenprinting space (also in Chatsworth) was cleared out to be transformed into The Release Room, a dedicated live recording facility set aside solely for such improvisational projects. The Handles continue to record somewhat consistently for their own devices with little to no regard for public opinion about what they do...it's therapy, not songwriting. It all seems to work better with herbs.
