All about us...Dean's was established in 1939 by the Vandyke family, and named after the second son, Roderick Dean Vandyke. Though named after him, according to Roderick he didn't like working at the store, and only lasted one summer. His father, and brother Dewey are the ones who ran the store, and could also be haunting it... check it out Tripar they have done an investigation on the two buildings....
Yes it is actually two buildings, with two separate owners. The original Deans is now owned by Jerry Dallape, who now runs both buildings, since 1990 (he purchased it from Brad Farnworth). The other building is owned by David. Before it was a liquor store the Vandyke family called it Dean's Cutrate Drugs. Mr. Vandyke sold medicines (for humans as well as horses at Fairmont Park race track). They at one time, also had boxing matches in the backroom. The rules for the matches can still be seen on the walls...
Brad Farnworth came into Deans in the 60's as Dewey Vandyke's partner, and eventually bought him out. During Brad's time, the store went by the name of VanDeans Sundries. Brad retired in 1990, and sold the store to Mike Lawlor and Jerry Dallape. Which went on for another thirteen years until Mr. Lawlor sold his part to Mr. Dallape in 2003.
Some of the other things that have been at this location include Collinsville's first power company, the Progressive Tavern, The Squirrel Cage Tavern, and The Miners Tavern. After The Miners Tavern closed, in 1939, it become Deans.
Things that have been at the location of the current wine room include Carl's Barber Shop, Jerrids Ceramic Shop (David's), Glickhman's Tin Shop, Betty's Beauty Shop, Linda's Beauty Shop, and a Resale-It Shop.
