Jay Sawyer is one of the top up and coming drummers in West Michigan. Originally from Grand Rapids, MI, Jay has studied with drummers including the great Billy Hart, Keith Hall and Tim Froncek. When Jay was in his senior year of high school, he earned many awards and honors, including: Michigan All-State Jazz Band, Hastings All-Star Jazz Band, Outstanding Band at the WMU Jazz Invitational, Outstanding Soloist at the WMU Jazz Invitational, Outstand Band at CMU Jazz Weekend, and also the Louis Armstrong Jazz award. He has worked with various artists around the West Michigan area and beyond. He has also worked along side artists Fred Hersch and Stefon Harris. Jay has performed with the Grand Rapids Symphony and has performed in multiple genres throughout the Western Michigan area. In 2007, he attended the world-renowned JAS Aspen Seminar (Christian McBride – Music Director).
