Sounds Like: DOC SPAN ALBUM REVIEW......... Doc Span Blues ‘Live In Australia’ www.docspan.net................Die-hard blues music lovers would already be familiar with Doc Span’s powerful harmonica- driven Chicago blues sound, and over the years we have seen Doc perform in various line-ups, from his much loved duo with guitarist Ross Williams, to the various band/duo collaborations alongside Australia’s who’s who in the Blues industry. Well this - Live In Australia - is Doc’s sixth CD, and this time around he decided to record ‘live’ in a studio with a full band. Performing alongside Doc (vocals/harmonicas) on this exceptionally good album are; Tim Gaze (guitars/vocals), Glen Muirhead (keyboards), Gus Fenwick (bass) and Max Sportelli (drums). The liner notes say it all; “11 standout tracks, chock full of groove. Originals and classic blues tracks, this CD takes Doc back to his roots.” From the opening track with Doc’s gruff vocals and swinging harp on ‘For You My Love’ (Pinetop Perkins), you feel like leaping onto the dance floor and grooving the night away! And that’s just the first track! A total rollercoaster ride of ‘good vibrations’ is sandwiched between these 5 covers and 6 originals. While Doc performs the vocals on nine tracks, Tim Gaze showcases his own melodic talent, stepping up to the mike for two numbers - ‘Slow Walkin’ Blues’ (Tim Gaze original) – a very smooth, laid back number, with the haunting sound of Doc’s harp weaving throughout, as well as the Chicago standard of a much loved blues rumba, ‘Whose Been Talkin’ (Howlin Wolf).Doc performs the vocals on four of his originals; ‘The Viper Blues’, ‘In Every Way’, ‘Red Dust’, and ‘Underground Blues’, as well as on an electric version of the Doc and Ross collaboration; ‘Jive 4321’. You can just see those Jivers hit the floor with this one!The three remaining covers include Little Walter’s ‘It Ain’t Right’, Memphis Slim’s ‘If You See Kay’, and a funky groove with combined lyrics from a Slim Harpo song and a Robert Johnson song ‘Funky King Bee’. the perfect choice for the closing track of a very professionally recorded album “chock full of groove”! *Julie Fox ..
