Binary oppositions are omnipresent in life. The paintings of Linda Hjorth Jensen mark some of these dualities in a face to face manner: woman vs. society, illusion vs. reality, traditional vs. modern, gender vs. sex, predator vs. prey and empowered vs. weak. She arranges multiple entities and layers to activate the surface optically, to encourage the viewer to find a relationship between the beings and to delve themselves into a vivid universe. Her methodology of comprising several objects is a manner in which viewers can travel around a work and in this process incites them to explore different artistic expressions, be it in media or in technique. An amalgamation of artistic styles is present such as expressionism, abstraction and figurative. Some of the outlined figures and humanoid creatures give a touch of wildness and aim to reflect an organized chaos amongst the realistic figurative elements. The technical inspiration of Linda Hjorth Jensen is found from both contemporaries and old masters such as Francis Bacon, Corneille van Beverloo, Paul Gauguin, Pablo Picasso, Jean Michel Basquiat, Jesper Knudsen and Kristian Hornsleth. Her paintings manifest vibrancy and a stormy colouristic temper, whilst still maintaining equilibrium in colour. Most of her works incorporate ideas of feminism, consumerism and modern-day issues. They are an investigation evolving from personal considerations and have been dealt with in an absurd humorous manner. Several of the pieces reflect her personal reactions of how women are perceived in social and cultural contexts as well as an expression on both the pleasures and complexities of being a woman.Raw imagery shares space with colorful abstract expressions and is indicative of the stark contrast between beauty and ugliness. In some paintings there is a desired lack of a master plan in which mistakes enrich the overall composition. Felines are used as symbolic portrayals of power and beauty. The gazelle is a re-appearing subject matter in which Linda Hjorth Jensen finds similitude in its personality and behavior to that of her own and to that of the socially perceived female identity. The gazelle is often associated with traits of elegance, agility, attentiveness and vulnerability. Linda Hjorth Jensen transforms the gazelle in her paintings to that of a more hostile predatory creature. This call for communicating an empowered prey is linked to her interest in feminist topics. Jensen – a lipstick and third generation feminist deems it important that there is a rejuvenation of the term “feminism”- a term often devalorized and misunderstood by society.
