WAITING FOR GODOT....

About Me

Used to be a lawyer before I escaped. Can be extremely shy until you get to know me, and then I never shut up. Extremely opinionated and passionate about things. Loyalty is hugely important to me. So are animals. And I have no idea why I'm writing in fragments. Heh.
Let's see, I grew up all over, mostly in Europe; I love to cook; Kafka (my GSD) is like my son; laziness is my burden in life; and double standards drive me up the bloody wall.

I edited my profile with Thomas’ Myspace Editor V3.6 !

My Interests

German Shepherds, German Shepherds and German Shepherds! Did I mention GSDs yet? :) Other areas are: animal nutrition; backgammon; cooking; good wines; perfumes; scuba; and history.
I have a particular fascination (okay, so it's a slight obsession) with Opus Dei; the Imperial Household Agency (IHA); military Special Forces; the SS (not out of any political sympathy); Vatican politics; and historical mysteries.

I'd like to meet:

Alan Rickman, Sean Bean, Anthony Bourdain, and lots of famous historical figures. Unfortunately, all the latter are dead... which takes care of that. And I doubt I'll ever meet any of the former, although I would quite willingly worship Alan Rickman even from a distance. (That voice! My. GOD! That VOICE! Even if he read the Tax Code, I would be dazed and entranced!)I'd have given a lot to meet Barbaro during his all-too-short lifetime.

Music:

Depeche Mode; Cause & Effect; Rammstein; Hans Zimmer; Beethoven; Mozart; Shakira; Toto Cutugno; Dalida; Joe Dassin; Sarah McLachlan; Muse; Placebo; Bond; Donna Summer; Leila Josefowicz; Anastacia; Billy Joel; Moby; disco; New Order; Sisters of Mercy; Erasure; 80s bands (Alphaville, Dexy's Midnight Runners, Duran Duran); old U2 and more.

Movies:

Military movies like Black Hawk Down are an absolute favorite. So are animal movies like K9, Sea Biscuit, The Black Stallion. Others include: The Rock; Hunt for Red October; Das Boat; Mommy Dearest; Gia; Dangerous Liasons; Jagged Edge; Outbreak (I'm a sucker for a virus movie); La Femme Nikita (original, not the ghastly remake); ET; and so many more.

Favorite comedies: The Birdcage never fails to make me laugh, so that might be No. 1. But I also like: Tootsie; Victor/Victoria; Young Frankenstein; My Cousin Vinny; To Be or Not to Be; Good Morning, Vietnam; 9 to5; and Private Benjamin.

Some favorite actors: Alan Rickman, Gene Hackman, John Malkovitch, Jeremy Irons, Marty Feldman (RIP); Meryl Streep; Glenn Close; Tommy Lee Jones; and Morgan Freeman, among others.

I'm a bit of a movie junkie. :)

Television:

Top Chef; House; The Closer; Heroes; Grey's Anatomy; The 4400; Lost; Iron Chef America; and Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares on BBC America.

Books:

Too many to list. My favorite serious author though is Camus, followed closely by Balzac, Oscar Wilde, and Zola. I love Baudelaire's poetry in Les Fleurs du Mal. I'm also a big fan of Junichiro Tanizaki, and Victor Hugo. I read quite a bit of political history, especially things pertaining to the Nazis. I despise James Joyce and Ayn Rand with a passion.
On a lighter level, I love Georgette Heyer, Colleen McCullough's First Man in Rome series, political or spy thrillers (Vince Flynn, Frederik Forsythe and my favorite, Joseph Finder), and some Chick Lit. I absolutely adore Harry Potter, and the next book can't come soon enough for me.

Heroes:

My parents; & people who do animal rescue.

My Blog

Snape, Dumbledore & the Power of Love

I've been rereading all the Harry Potter books this week in anticipation of the big day on Saturday and, having *JUST* finished Book 6 (yes, I know it's 4:55 a.m.), suddenly, something just hit me. No...

Jane Fonda, John Kerry, Barbaro, a Cat & a Cow

Jane Fonda, John Kerry, Barbaro, a Cat & a Cow... I know, I know, it sounds like a deranged version of "The Cook, the Thief, his Wife & her Lover" but there is a link (really!)(no, truly, I sw...

Why Barbaro really -- REALLY -- mattered

Almost 9 months after the Preakness and my very first blog entry, I'm back to write about Barbaro and why he matters. It was the subject of that first blog, and today, as then, I'm angry about all the...

Opus Dei & John Allen, Idiot Apologist Extraordinaire

So I was catching up with a friend after many weeks and it turns out that he is one of probably 10 people on the planet who hasn't heard of Opus Dei. Which means he's one of 30 people in the world who...

The Chick Lit Genre

I'm not even sure where to start given all the books I've read lately, in a desperate attempt to stave off reality. But I think I must start with a small observation about the difference between Briti...

WHEN ADULTERY MEANS MORE THAN DRUG USE IN CELEBRITY FANDOM

I find it very interesting that adultery is more of a deal-breaker than drug use in fan worship. Let me be very clear in writing this that I'm not condoning adultery but why is does it enrage fans or ...

SURVEY SAYS.....

I see that there are a gazillion surveys on the bulletins but it's probably too late for me to answer any of them. Plus, I have no clue if my answer would just go out to my friends or if everyone on t...

MESSAGE BOARD IDIOTS, RELIGION, & BARBARO

My first attempt at this blogging thing, so I'm going to ramble. Not that I don't normally but this will be even more free-flowing and scattered than usual. Oh, and forget formatting, grammar and...
