In the year 1936 in Oakland, California, a young entrepreneur named Albert Holloway decided to take advantage of the local taverns by creating a snack that would be the perfect accompaniment to a cold mug of beer. He called it Brown Jug Toasted Corn and sold it to the tavern owners to serve free to their patrons.Holloway's hunch proved to be right, but it wasn't long before his successful business was forced to come to a standstill. A law was passed in California that prohibited tavern owners from giving away food.He later renamed his product to be Corn Nuts. Some time later he read of a giant breed of corn grown in Cusco, Peru. Holloway sought to make his product using this variety's giant kernels. Extensive research eventually led to a hybrid Cuzco corn which could be grown in the climate conditions of the United States
