The Reason:
Before time was time, over seven hundred days ago, the idea behind Renovators Dream first drifted through the minds of Antics and Seizure while they both attended a fine yet unnamed tertiary facility. It was only after years of complacency that they became irritated at their own laziness. Seizure was an established performing artist with the live hip-hop crew: Urban Expression, it was here he established himself as a relentless party vibe MC while never neglecting his conscious lyrics. Antics became frustrated at writing short stories, poems and lyrics that drifted away without ever enjoying an audience. Without warning, Urban Expression disbanded, and Antics was tired of talking the talk, and not walking the walk. So walk the walk they did.
The Conception:
It was in the virtual world that Antics met Unconventional Science. Originally from Colorado this beat maker had a sixth sense for abstract melodies and devastating drum patterns. This concoction was appealing and Antics arranged a couple of beats that was to be the beginning of “The Business Card EPâ€.
Upon reflection on the project as it stood, the lads realised it had a solid foundation, and was a unique structure in the local Melbourne Scene. It was a Renovator’s Dream.
The Twist:
From these humble beginnings Antics & Seizure nurtured Unconventional Science’s beats as they poured over the Pacific. Negotiations for the music were made over Internet chat and emails. The dream was to be inspired by art, in this case Uncon's music. Letting the sound influence the lyrics and the structure resulted in a distinct and unique sound not yet heard in hip hop.
The Process.
Antics & Seizure spent the good part of two years writing the lyrics that they used for Renovator’s Dream. They set high standards for their work, at times losing momentum and leaving it for months on end. Eventually a deadline was set in mid 2006 to finish the writing for the 10 beats Unconventional Science had chosen. What comes next could be argued as the life of the album. Dan Graetzer from BeatBoy Productions became involved in the project as sound engineer and producer. Combining technological and musical knowledge with talent Dan was instrumental in creating the soundscape you hear. Nina Benvenuti was then poached from Antics’ first crew, Just Like Us. A talented Jazz singer she took to these songs and made them her own. Adding even more depth to tapestry. What was left was a musical talent pool Antics & Seizure exploited to turn tracks into songs.
Since then:
Since finishing the album, Renovator’s Dream has been received warmly. Becoming 3RRR first Australian Hip Hop Album of the Week in nearly 12 months and lining up national distribution through Oz rap powerhouse Obese Records.
What next?
We play shows, promote and try and sell albums. As far as a follow-up goes: Whispers, only whispers.
