COIN TOSS/LET THE GAMES BEGINWhen it comes to their sports teams,Miami is an unconditionally loving town. A quick glance at the Miami Dolphins performance record over the last twenty-five years proves this point. Applied to the contact sport known as Hip-Hop, it is apparent that such love and loyalty has transferred over well to some locals-made-good e.g. LUTHER "Uncle Luke"
CAMPBELL/2LIVE CREW; TRICK DADDY DOLLARS;TRINA etc.Next up in the draft pick is FACEOFF,a twenty-year-old Miami rhyme stylist by way of Bahamian birth and Haitian Parentage. Signed to recently revived indie label QUICK HIT RECORDS, FACE is poised and ready to defend Team Miami. His story does not stray far from the beaten path of your average inner-city youth. At age three he was abandoned by his mother then later 'rescued' by his re-married father who raised him along with seven brothers and five sisters. Having so many mouths to feed paired with an all-too-constant struggle for the proverbial opportunities seeked by immigrant families in the U.S. meant that required daily parental guidance was little-or-nil for a young FACE. And in his pre-teen years, trouble seemed to seek HIM out.Yes,young FACE was an attention magnet early on. It's just that the type of attention was not always the most desired. It started around the sixth-grade when he was locked up in Juvenile Hall, and almost ended a couple of years ago when his family's house was riddled with bullets-one of which grazed his sister's thigh before lodging itself into his T.V. -watching chair(he,of course, was not home at the time). Along the way were the requisite appearances of drugs(he dabbled in dope dealing)and guns(he recently beat a long-pending weapons charge),but the real turning point came about in 2004 when his best friend, Kevens Pierre, was shot and killed on the side of highway I-95. It turns out that music was a passion that the two of them shared. Needless to say, FACE felt beyond obligated to carry the torch. After dropping out of High School in the eleventh grade,he recently re-enrolled;received his High School Diploma, and has decided to put pen-to-pad full-tilt!As he nears the completion of his full length album, the streets of Miami have taken advance notice of his skills via assorted guest appearances and his latest mixed Cd-hosted by Miami's own DJ EPPS(103.5 The Beat) which was unleashed on the masses this past Memorial Day Weekend. As exemplified on his current mixed Cd,FACEOFF possesses a comandeering style akin to that of a Hockey-playing center linesman awaiting the game-opening puck drop. His vocal delivery is steady and confident with a tone reminiscent of BIGGIE. Just check the mixtape tracks(instant club banger) "Fireman" and(melodically laced) "Window Shoppin' " for reference of his transitional verbal skills. That being said,it is also quite clear that the production qualities on said disc(compliments of
QHR's in-house preduction team headed by One Mystery) are a bright synopsis of the various sonic styles currently in play throughout the Hip-Hop genre...And Furthermore proving FACEOFF can adapt fluidly herein.
Where is this promising, young, serious, raw talent headed and what will he bring to the game? Time will tell. However, those who choose to be armchair quarterbacks and sideline detractors off-the-rip best prepare for over-time.................
