St. Dymphna

The Patron Saint of Mental illness

About Me

About Me - Saint, Martyr, and Devote Virgin.
I edited my profile with Thomas Myspace Editor V3.6 !
I was a princess of the Orile (Louth) Kingdom of Ireland and the daughter of a pagan King named Damon who as I know is mentally insane. I was secretly baptized a Christian and will follow my God until the end. After the death of my loving mother, who was of extraordinary beauty, my father's servants looked all throughout the land to find someone of my mothers beauty and of nobility after they failed they advised my father King Damon to marry me when I was only fourteen and his daughter, I know sick. I fled my father and created a church in the 7th century where I helped the sick in Chilldamhnait, Achill Island in Ireland in beautiful County Mayo. My father found me there so I fled with Father Gerebernus and landed at Antwerp in Belgium. Where we went to the village of Gheel, to the chapel of St. Martin. Word got out we were there and my father discovered our whereabout. My father had his servants, cut Father Gerebernus's head from his body. I steal told my father I wouldn't give myself to him and he then cut my head off. Our corpses were put in a sarcophagi and entombed in a cave where they were found later. My body was buried in the church of Gheel, and as will as the head of the St. Gerebernus his bones are located in Kanten Germany at his church. Both of us are saints now and our bones are looked at as holy relics. I now help those who are mentally sick and is a cardinal for those who suffer from childhood molestation, incest, rape, and child abuse. The Bollandists have published numerous accounts of my miraculous cures, especially between 1604 and 1668. As a result, I have established a colony for lunatics at Gheel; even now there are sometimes as many as fifteen hundred whose relatives invoke me for their cure. The insane here are treated in a peculiar manner; it is only in the beginning that they are placed in an institution for observation; later they are given shelter in the homes of the inhabitants, take part in their agricultural labours, and are treated very kindly. They are watched without being conscious of it. The treatment produces good results. My old church in Gheel was destroyed by fire in 1489. The new church was consecrated in 1532 and is still standing. Every year on my feast day and on the Tuesday after Pentecost numerous pilgrims visit my shrine. My other church in Chilldamhnait, Achill Island, County Mayo, Ireland steal stands as a ruin. My relics are known to heal epilepsy and insanity.

Nine Prayers to Saint Dymphna Faith Dear Saint Dymphna, you gave us an example in your own life of firm faith. Neither flattery, earthly rewards nor the threat of death caused you to waver in your fidelity to God. Please help us then, amid the uncertainties of life, to imitate your wholehearted dedication to ChriSaint Be good enough to come to our aid in our need, and pray for us to God. Amen. HopeGood Saint Dymphna, you placed all your hope in Christ's promises, and sacrificed even your life in that hope. The Lord, God, rewarded your constancy by making your name known and loved over many centuries by the thousands whom you have aided in time of difficulty. Please assist us now in our present necessity, and intercede before God for our intentions. Obtain for us a firm hope like your own in God's unfailing protection. Amen. Charity You are celebrated Saint Dymphna, for your goodness to others. Both in your lifetime, and even more in the ages since, you have again and again demonstrated your concern for those who are mentally disturbed or emotionally troubled. Kindly secure for me, then, some measure of your own serene love, and ask our Lord to give us a share in His life and boundless charity. Amen. Prudence You were marked in life, Saint Dymphna, by a high degree of prudence. You sought and followed the advice of your confessor and spiritual guide. You fled from temptation even when it meant exile and poverty. In your last extremity you chose to die rather than offend God. Please help us now by your merits not only to know what is right, but procure for us also the strength to do it. Amen. Justice Admirable Saint Dymphna, how just you were to all whom you encountered, and how careful you were to give every person his due, and more than he might desire or expect. By your power with God please come to assist us to be just to all we meet, and even to be generous in giving everyone more than strict justice requires. Amen. Temperance Generous Saint Dymphna, like all Christ's martyrs you gained this crowning grace because you prepared for it by a life of self denial. By faithfulness in smaller things you were ready for your final trial. Please teach us by your example and help to use the good things of life so that we may not miss our chance for life eternal. Help us, too, to watch and pray for ourselves and others. Amen. Fortitude Courageous Saint Dymphna, your strength was from God. His grace enabled you to resist evil, and to prefer exile to a life of sinful luxury. Christ's own power preserved you faithful to Him in life and in death. In your kindness help us to imitate your example in little things, and gain for us fortitude to bear with the misfortunes we meet, and strength to overcome our weakness. Amen. Chastity Most pure virgin, Saint Dymphna, we live at a time when many are intent on satisfying every carnal appetite. Your single-minded dedication to Christ alone is providential and inspiring. Please help us by your power with God to see life in proportion as you did. With your aid we propose to perform all our actions for a pure motive, and promptly to resist all our evil inclinations. Amen. Perseverance Most faithful Saint Dymphna, you remained true to your baptismal promises to the very end. You are, therefore, honored, known, and loved after 1,400 years by people you have aided all over the world. We do not know how long or short a time is left to us of this life here, but help us in any case to be faithful to God to the end. Please gain for us the grace to live one day at a time as if each were to be our last. Amen. In Nervous or Emotional Distress I turn to you, dear virgin and martyr, confident of your power with God and of your willingness to take my cause into your hands. I praise and bless the Lord for giving you to us as patron of the nervous and emotionally disturbed. I firmly hope that through your kind intercession He will restore my lost serenity and peace of mind. May He speak to my heart and reassure me: "My peace I give you. Let not your heart be troubled nor let it be afraid." Pray for me, dear St. Dymphna, that my nervous and emotional turmoil may cease, and that I may again know serenity and personal peace. Amen. Center In Physical Illness I appeal to you in my illness, dear St. Dymphna. I would be so grateful for a total and happy recovery, for the blessed gift of health in every fiber of my being. May the Lord Jesus, who mercifully healed the sick during His earthly days, have pity on me and make me well again. Ask Him to command sickness to depart and grant me a full measure of health, that I may rejoice in giving Him glory and praise. Amen. For Love of God and of Neighbor Dear St. Dymphna, our Church leaders reminded us at Vatican II that "it is the love of God and of neighbor which points out the true disciple of Christ." The same reminder is issued repeatedly, and yet, how often I fail the test of true discipleship. Intercede, please, in my favor, dear girl-martyr, that I may truly love the Lord my God and all His family on earth. May this love remain mine in life and lead me to heaven, where with all the saints, I shall adore the Trinity. Amen. For a Strong Faith To you, dear St. Dymphna, who have completed your pilgrimage of faith and now dwell with the Lord forever, I appeal for the blessing of a strong and mature faith. May I preserve in my baptismal promises to Christ, no matter what the cost. May I conduct myself now and always as a true believer in the eternal truths God has revealed. Help me always with your prayers as I walk in faith toward the reward promised to those who, without having seen Christ, yet love Him and believe in Him. Amen. For Relatives and Friends I humbly request you, dear virgin and martyr Dymphna, to take under your protection all who are bound to me by ties of blood or friendship. May all the lives which touch mine experience the blessings God is pleased to grant through your intercession. I now commend to your prayers all the intentions of all my relatives and friends. Remember also those persons who have asked me to pray for them. Pray especially for the lonely and forsaken who have no one to pray for them. Thank you, dear St. Dymphna, for remembering us all before our God and Savior. Amen. For Priests You revered your priestly guide as God's minister and faithfully followed his counsels. From his hands you received the Body of Christ; from his presence, strength and moral support. Please pray for the priests dear to me, the priests who have helped me, the priests in this country and in the whole world. May they serve God generously and overcome all the obstacles that face them. May they always be loyal dispensers of the mysteries of God. Amen. For Fellowship with the Saints Devotion to you, dear St. Dymphna, brings me closer to Christ. May it lead me still closer to Him. The Church wishes us to seek from God's saints example in their way of life, fellowship in their communion, and aid by their intercession. May my devotion to all the saints enrich my worship of God the Father, through Christ, in Union with the Holy Spirit. O lovable St. Dymphna, you are deeply interested in my final reunion with God abd His saints. Pray for me that I may truly honor them during life and enjoy their companionship in our heavenly homeland forever. Amen. For Any Special Need Glorious St. Dymphna, you are the patron of the nervous and emotionally disturbed. I am certain, however, that your charity embraces everyone. I am certain that you lend a listening ear to any prayer offered for any special need. You will, I am sure, take my problem to heart and pray for me that it may be happily settled. (Here mention your special problem or difficulty.) You will plead for me and obtain the help I need. Already I offer you my sincere and grateful thanks, so great is my confidence that God will hear and answer your prayers. Amen.St. Dymphna, Virgin and Martyr, pray for us.
