Dog Meat Records

Dog Meat Records , was an important record label for the Australian hard rock music scene in the 1990s. Dog Meat released recordings by great Australian artists such as Hoss, Powder Monkeys, Splatterheads, Brother Brick, Bored, Freeloaders and the Philisteins as well as releasing heaps of records by overseas bands such as The Lazy Cowgirls, New Bomb Turks, Cheater Slicks and Jeff Dahl to name but a few.
The Dog Meat Label existed at a time when the music industry was really crap - the radio was ruled by lame pseudo grunge like Silverchair and the kids all went to the Big Day Out looking cool wearing "grunge" clothing bought from K-mart. Throughout this period Dog Meat put out bloody great rock'n'roll records by real rock'n'roll bands and never tried to fit in with what was supposedly trendy!! Dog Meat was against the grain and was a beacon of lo-fi, dirty rock'n'roll in a sea of commercialised shit. It's safe to say that no band on this label ever spent 6 months tuning a snare drum in a modern recording studio with a mega bucks producer like Butch Vig. Dog Meat made it possible for lots of retrograde underdog Australian bands to get their music released at a time when practically nobody cared about rock'n'roll.
So next time you are poking around in some 2nd hand record store, looking on ebay at rare vinyl or at a garage sale, and you see a 7" vinyl single or a CD with the famous Dog Meat label on it, take a punt and buy it... it might just be the best thing you never heard, it will definitely be rock'n'roll!
