Gerard Way (born April 9, 1977) from NewJersey, is the lead singer of the band My Chemical Romance, brother to band mate Mikey Way (bass). When he lived in NewJersey, he used to stalk Christina Ricci, after finding outshe lived near there. There he went to his first concert(Bruce Springsteen) with his mother, and once worked as acart boy/bagger in a Grocery store. After graduating fromhigh school in 1995, he attended School of Visual Arts inNew York City graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in1999. In 2001, Way says he tried to sell an animatedtelevision series to Cartoon Network[1] called TheBreakfast Monkey.[2] He maintains that Cartoon Networkturned down the pitch because it was too similar to AquaTeen Hunger Force, then already in production.
Family &Childhood
Gerard is 1/2 Italian (mother's side), and also 1/2Scottish (father's side). Gerard's grandmother Elena taughthim how to draw, sing and perform and started to play inbands when he was only eleven. Gerard is obsessed with theidea of death, and has had many spooky experiences withOuija boards. When he was a child, he realized thateveryone he cares for will die, and everyone will diealone.
Drugs, alcohol &art
He has recently recovered from an addiction to drugs andalcohol, being sober as of August 2004, and visits atherapist when the band's not on tour. However, he stillenjoys smoking Marlboro red cigarettes. He attended theSchool of Visual Arts in New York City, with the dream ofbeing a comic book artist, (he loved comic books, and hisfavorite superhero was always Wolverine) before forming MyChemical Romance in 2001. He pitched a cartoon for CartoonNetwork called "The Breakfast Monkey", but it sadly didn'twork out. He considers himself a failed comic book artistyet has still done the artwork for the My Chemical Romancealbums and used to design merchandise for the band"Thursday".
The Formation ofMCR
When the September 11th attacks occurred, Way was workingin the comic industry in New York, and could see the horroroccurring at the Twin Towers. This inspired him to "dosomething with his life", and he formed the band MyChemical Romance. The song "Skylines and Turnstiles" is thefirst song ever written by My Chemical Romance, and it wasinspired by Way's experience with the 9/11 incident. Theband's name, suggested by Mikey Way, came from a bookwritten by Irvine Welsh, entitled Ecstasy: Three Tales ofChemical Romance. Gerard brought together Ray Toro, MattPelissier (later replaced by Bob Bryar), Frank Iero, andhis brother Mikey to play gigs along the East Coast. Theband soon released its first album I Brought You MyBullets, You Brought Me Your Love in 2002 under the at thattime obscure New Jersey label Eyeball Records. Music turnedout to be an effective means for Way to deal with hislongtime battle against depression, alcoholism, andprescription drug abuse, leading to the creation of deeplypersonal songs such as "Helena"[4], written after the deathof his grandmother, Elena Lee Rush.
Despite his success as a musician, Way has not left hisdrawing behind: He drew all of the art on the band's secondalbum, Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge and has designedmerchandise for his and other similar bands. He also hasmade efforts in order to raise money through his art forcauses such as the fight against breast cancer. Othercharity funds include working with The Used lead singerBert McCracken to release a cover of the Queen and DavidBowie single "Under Pressure", on iTunes for Tsunami Reliefcharity.
Recently on MTV2's All That Rocks, Way was voted "AlmightyKing of Rock" with 63% of the total votes.
Discography
..
Way and his band released their first CD, I Brought You MyBullets, You Brought Me Your Love in 2002 and have releaseda CD titled Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge in June 2004.Way is always trying to write new material, and he usuallygets song ideas from the newspaper. He sees lyrics as a wayof telling a story, and usually loves dark stuff "anythingtwisted, weird, and a little evil".
My ChemicalRomance
He and his band mates hope to start working on their thirdalbum late 2006. They earned popularity with their hitsingle I'm Not Okay (I promise) and later with a tribute tohis late grandmother Elena Lee Rush titled Helena. Gerardcame up with the wardrobe ideas for the Helena video. Bothsongs are from their CD "Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge".Their next two singles, in which they hope to get videosfor, are You Know What They Do to Guys Like Us in Prison, with additional vocals of Bert McCracken from one of their"brother" bands The Used, along with their tragic loss songThe Ghost of You. Way is known to wear heavy eye shadowduring his band's concerts, but has been seen with a thickblack strip along his eyes, during the Taste Of Chaos Tour2005. He is deathly afraid of needles, so he doesn't haveany piercings or tattoos, and nipple rings freak him out.
Fued With BertMcCraken
Way was close friends with The Used singer, Bert McCracken. The two recorded several songs together, including a coverof "Under Pressure" and the My Chemical Romance song, "YouKnow What They Do To Guys Like Us In Prison", in whichMcCracken provides backup vocals. However, in recent monthsthey have had a falling out. Fans suspect that the suddenfeud has been caused by the amount of fame My ChemicalRomance has had over the success of The Used, while othershave said that it was because later productions of TheUsed's album contained the single "Under Pressure", whichwas originally intended to raise money for Tsunami victims.McCracken has said in an interview with VH1, "I'd prefernot to say anything about My Chemical Romance, except thatwe did have a falling out. We don't speak at all anymore. It's got nothing to do with their success. I'm completelycomfortable with where our band is at. We used to be veryclose, but no more. We had a falling out. The rest of myband, they're still mates with all the guys in that band. But I'd prefer to say nothing more about My ChemicalRomance.". Both Way and his brother have made statementssince, indicating McCracken was only joking, confessingthat they remain in contact with him and nothing hashappened between them.
Favorites
..His favorite band is now Iron Maiden, but is still a DavidBowie fan. He has been obsessed with revenge ever since heheard the Black Flag song 'Revenge'. He has undoubtedlyconfirmed that he thinks Brody Dalle from the Distillers ishot, and has always loved bats. He owns the same colorStratocasters as Billie Joe Armstrong (front man of thesmash pop/punk trio Green Day), and his dream car hasalways been a red Corvette with the license plate "KNIVES".
Quotes
"If You,Or Anyone You Know,
Are Severely Depressed,
You Need To Fucking Talk To Somebody,
Whether Its Your Mom,Your Best Friend,
Or Someone At School,
I Dont Give A Fuck,
Your Just Pissing Your Life Away On Suicide..
Its Fucking Bullshit."
- Gerard Way.
"My grandma made me a Batman costume when I was inkindergarten. It was dark blue and the bat was orange -- atotal product of late '70s."
"If you don't go to high school you will definitely go tojail."
"I'd rather be a creature of the night than anold dude."
"So many people treat you like you're a kidso you might as well act like one and throw your televisionout of the hotel window"
"Be Yourself, Don't takeanyone's shit and never let them take you alive..."
"Sohow was Christmas for you guys? Did you all get lots ofnice black t-shirts?"
"If you're gonna buy me apresent, don't spend more than twenty five bucks, you'llget a blowjob anyway."
"Surrounding myself with fansmakes me feel like I'm not going through it alone."
"The Devil got landed with a shitty job, he has to dealwith assholes everyday, he's probably bored as hell." "WhenI was writing it, I was remembering how hard it was to be a16-year-old in high school. I always wanted to be anartist, so I was this loner kid who just got drunk all thetime. I only had one real friend. There was a girl I reallyliked, and she ended up taking really sleazy photographswith her boyfriend, and that really crushed me, I was justswimming in this pit of despair, jealousy and alcoholism."
"It erases everything I hate about myself. Nothing canhurt me. I feel completely invincible. I feel like everyoneelse on that stage is invincible and we're capable ofanything. There's no stopping us." "I'd enjoy it if a guygrabbed my ass. I guess it all depends on how he grabbedit, too."
"When you are kissing a guy with a beard,it's different." "There's such a lack of sex in music"
"It takes me a while to tell stories. I think it'sbecause I was drunk for three years"
"I was this weirdloner kid who got drunk by himself all the time." (talkingabout high school)
"I have a nihilistic attitude soit's like, the new gay... it's popular." (Gerard on why weshould give a damn about MCR)
"Look at me, with mypretty bracelet and tiara... I'm a fuckin' princess!"
"Were not a festival band, playing during the day wassomething we had to get over, I was like uhh this sun stuffkind of sucks"
"When we first started out I had areally big issue and a lot of my loved ones had a reallybig issue with the fact that I was totally in pain up thereand there was a time when I tried to hurt myself off stage, but I got over that. Like, you should never want to hurtyourself. You should love yourself. Sometimes you have tokind of die inside in order to rise from your own ashes andbelieve in yourself and love yourself and become a newperson and I think that that is going to be a lot of whatthe next record is about, not to plug it or anything. Like,it's going to talk about dying and coming back to becomewhat you totally want to become. We are all becoming whatwe want to become."
"What I Like about The Sims is thatI don't have a normal life at all, so I play this gamewhere these people have these really boring, mundane lives. It's fun. My Sims family is called the Cholly family. Idon't know why I picked that name; it's kind of random. Theteenage daughter is my favourite, because I just had her gothrough this Goth phase. She's really kind of nerdy and shejust became a concert violinist, which is pretty huge forthe family. And she got into private school. But shestarted wearing black lipstick and she dyed her hairpurple. It's pretty huge."
"I went to school in drag,in art school and my day was completely different becauseeverybody thought I was a chick. You should see me as achick. So I went as a girl, as like an experiment and itworked really well and everyone was really nice to me but Icouldn't talk obviously...you know train conductors werereally cool to me on my commute...HA! I looked hot as achick!"
"Craziest thing that ever happened to me wasbeing attacked by a black bird. It pecked the shit out ofmy head. We were at this hotel called The Phoenix in SanFrancisco. We were leaving to go to a show the next morningand the bird just fuckin' attacked my head. And the nextday Slipknot were there, they were coming in as we wereleaving, and they got attacked by birds too."
"Yeah, obviously we use vampires as a metaphor for something else, something deeper than just the supernatural. But there'sjust something about the bloodsucking walking dead, thatcan say so much to people. There are really so many peopletrying to get control over you on a daily basis and stealyour soul in some way, take a part of you..."
"Um, lotsof people grab my ass. I'm actually starting to get thisthing now where people grab my package. That actuallyhappened once in Boston, it usually doesn't happen. We wentover to England and it happened at almost every show. Idon't really enjoy any kind of invasion of privacy likethat I guess. Grabbing my package is obviously a totalinvasion of privacy I'm not into that at all."
"That'swhat happens when you're all borderline psychotic andtherein lies the beauty of this band - our duality. There'sa duality to each band member too. There's a desire to havethis constant conflict. If we write a write a song and itturns out really poppy, we have to make the lyrics reallyfucked up. There's psychosis to everything we do for sure. One day we're probably gonna write this number one pop tunethat will be about a massacre!"
"If for one minute youthink you're better than a sixteen year old girl in a GreenDay t-shirt, you are sorely mistaken. Remember the firsttime you went to a show and saw your favorite band. Youwore their shirt, and sang every word. You didn't knowanything about scene politics, haircuts, or what was cool. All you knew was that this music made you feel differentfrom anyone you shared a locker with. Someone finallyunderstood you. This is what music is about."
[scream to the tune of the background noise]
So I'm not really sure what to say about myself without sounding like an obsessed fangirl... but hey. Here goes nothing! I would like to be fan of the month because I'm easily one of the biggest MCR fans in my whole part of the country. (Okay maybe not that much but you get the idea). I can't even put into words what they have done for me. I know this sounds really typical and all, but they really did save my life. When I was depressed, I sat in the shower one day and thought about cutting myself, and then when I was about to do it, "think happy thoughts" popped into my head, and at that moment I decided that if they were strong enough to overcome their problems, then I could too. Sadly I lost my grandmother not long after that, and the hardest part of that for me was losing someone I loved with all my heart. She taught me everything she knew... how to write, to draw, to paint, to love, to live. She supported my every endeavor and to this day I am the only one who inherited her artistic abilities. (sound familiar?) The ONLY thing that helped me deal with her passing was Helena. I can't watch that video or listen to that song without getting teary-eyed. I graduated from high school last year, and I left behind a two-foot mural on the wall of my school of Pepe and The Black Parade, and its release date. MCR is forever on my old high school, because it is on the National Registry of Historic Places. I also left high school with three art pieces I am very proud of... a watercolor portrait of Gerard, an ink piece of the whole band, and an ink/watercolor piece of the whole band. I have 3 MCR tattoos...one across my shoulders that says "the world will never take my heart", one on my right arm that simply says "fear", and its partner on my left arm reads "regret". I work at Hot Topic, and every October we dress up throughout the month for Halloween, and every year I dress up as Helena, Three Cheers-era Gerard,
Fan Of The Week
hello im Emma.
i have been a fan sence three cheers.
my chemical romance are my heros. they realy did save my life! they told me to be my slelf. the best line gerard has ever said that got me was the whole speech about girls should be ok with them selves and to not take shit from any one. the black parade touched me the most emotionaly because my uncle died from 3 types of cancer mainly lung cancer but any ways lissening to that song reminded me of going to the funeral and seeing my mom and my aunt cry. there music sved me from killing myself. famouse last words helped me cope with the fact that every one dies and that it shouldnt end in suck a way that every one around me suffers. and so i jus end with saying that i love mcr and i will never ever stop! there music is so amazing and the beauty in the lyrics make me shiver
*hug*Some of them we lost the name of the artist.
