Towards Peace and Nonviolent Conflict Resolution!
"THE MONTEREY CALL" OF GLOBAL MAJORITY
We, reflecting a diversity of nationalities, ethnicities, races, religions, orientations, languages, and cultures, share a common commitment to organize and facilitate an international movement to promote non-violent conflict resolution.
We, the members of Global Majority, hereby issue this international call to action:
Affirming that violence is too often the preferred option for conflict resolution,
Acknowledging the multi-faceted nature of violence rooted in political marginalization, poverty, racial and gender discrimination, environmental degradation, population displacement, and inadequate healthcare - especially as manifest in the global HIV/AIDS crisis,
Recognizing and emphasizing the universal human right of all people to realize their fullest potential of human capacity and develop cultures of peace,
The Global Majority hereby:
Calls upon state and non-state actors, including persons of civil society, academia, business, labor, religious communities and the media, to prioritize the use of non-violent means of conflict resolution as a moral imperative of the 21st century;
Advocates for the creation of a broad and sustained movement promoting dialogue in order to give voice to the global majority, based on our belief that to be human is to affirm the humanity of others, and on our commitment to activate the “powerful power of the powerless”;
Invites our respective constituencies to join in the development of decentralized and culturally adapted initiatives in support of this movement;
Resolves to develop the necessary organizational structures and strategies to effectively implement this call.
