Overwhelmingly talented...Dramatically different...Mesmerizing...You've just been hit with some of the terms used to describe Philly's own...CHERRI POET
Filled with juice, this sparkling multi-talented artist performs Reggae/ Dancehall /Hip-Hop and Poetry. Bringing new light to what music and entertainment is all about. Her difference is evident at every performance. Delivering a fusion of genres with a sweet vibe sure to knock your socks off. Known for her hype, drama, thought filled - thought provoking lyrics; coupled with insane, catch 'em hooks, an amazing delivery there of; backed by original - futuristic beat thumping music. Cherri Poet "got serious" as she put it about music in 1997. After compiling enough poetry to fill more than 4 books, Cherri Poet traveled to the small island of Jamaica, West Indies, where by chance was invited to read her poetry as a local Kingston band rehearsed for upcoming gigs. According to Cherri Poet, "it was a simple opportunity to get heard that became the inspiration and courage to pursue a career as a recording artist." "That was the beginning for me…a defining moment never to be forgotten." Cherri Poet returned to her hometown Philadelphia, and has been making big noise on the underground scene since. Hitting every poetry spot and hip hop club in and around the area. By 2001, Cherri Poet had been featured on several radio shows, including Power 99fm with the Hot Boys as well as former Philly 103.9, now 100.3 the beat, with Giant.
She showed off her acting skills in 3 Freedom Theater renditions, playing the part of "customer" in Lil' Shop of Horrors; "Missy"-wife to "Gitlow" in Perlie; and "Lady in green" in Women of Color Who've Contemplated Suicide, When The Rainbow Is Enough. Patricia Scott Hobs, Choreographer/Director of Student affairs at Freedom Theatre, recalled Cherri Poets performance: "Boy, she sure has a way with characters."
By then, Cherri Poet had linked up with Producers Cloyd Wallase and Boris (Franz) Richards to record and release her first Hip-Hop single titled "Switcheroo". A hard core - beat banging — melody driven song which entertained the idea of switching roles in a relationship. The single received an amazing response on the underground scene; selling out at local record stores. In fact, owner, Sounds of Upper Darby, a record store located just outside of Philadelphia, reported having to remove copies from the shelves and placing them up front, near the cash register due to rapid sales. The follow up to this hit single was the release of her first full-length C.D., "Speak My Calling". Simultaneously, Cherri Poet continued to thrill audiences with her West-Indian style poetry; reminiscent of Jamaica's own "Ms Lou" and the late "Mass. John"; but with her own style and flair. Dubbed "likkle Ms. Low" by Dupree Snappe, a well known Philadelphia Promoter; who booked her for a performance at one event alongside well known Dub Poetry artist — Muta Baruca; and announced her at another Caribbean Festival performance held at Penn's Landing in Philadelphia. Cherri Poet brought poetry to life on stage like you would see in a play. Storytelling - Poetry complete with props and actors and dressed in costume. These performances brought audiences to their feet…screaming and hollering, shouting and whistling. ArtRubalcava, Producer/Reporter- Visions 6abc, recalls Cherri Poet's performance at the 14th Annual Caribbean Festival along the Columbus avenue waterfront: "Energetic, Captivating, Original performer… she can shake up a crowd".
Since then, Cherri Poet has been seen performing events such as The Fringe Festival, New York City downtime with Grammy Award winning artist "Sara Brenner" and Rock band "G-Spot Band", "the Dropband" and many more. Cherri Poet has also been seen doing her part in raising awareness and funds for benefit events such as Strings for schools, MusiCares Foundation- (an affiliate of the Grammy organization) and Philly AidsWalk 2003 and 2004. Having lost a brother to the dread disease, Cherri Poet recently became volunteer spokesperson for the Philly AidsWalk.
