Council of One

About Me

Council of One is the musical manifestation of guitarist Chris Oberst. Chris plays a unique style that veers between jazz, rock and metal. Strong musical chops are in evidence, but Chris does more than just play really fast, really often. A musician plays the silence as much as he plays the notes. Although Chris has a background in rock-based instrumentals (think Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and Eric Johnson), Council of One represents a turn toward an improvisation-centered style of jazz that is amped up, edgy, and unconcerned with any musical boundaries recognized by the so-called “experts.” Inspired by the heady days of avant garde and fusion jazz in the ‘60s and ‘70s, Council of One is on a journey to explore new sonic frontiers and take the listener to new places.

The new album, One Day in August, is a single, 48-minute improvised piece that morphs through several stages and features searing and sophisticated guitar work throughout. You can download the album in its entirety at on the CoO page at MusicV2 , or download a 7 1/2 minute excerpt at the CoO Soundclick page .
The previous album, One Week in December, is composed of a variety of mostly improvised jazz/rock pieces and is available for streaming and download in its entirety at the CoO Soundclick page . If you want a CD version, you can buy that through CD Baby by clicking this link:
