About Me
WELCOME TO DAYTON, OHIO_SISTER CITY TO HELL__POP. DEAD
HERALDING THE APOCALYPSE 1996-2000
TWENTYTHIRDCHAPTER was formed out of the ashes of SON OF DOG (Louisville, KY) and PAWN (Dayton, OH). The name came into existence after DAVE STOKER and FRANK HARMON got higher than a satellite and watched Christopher Walken fuck shit up in THE PROPHECY. The previously mentioned hoodlums jammed a bit with a few potential members before AUSTIN LUCAS (guitar) and COLLIN SNYDER (drums) (both of Bloomington, In) came to fill out the roster. This line-up practiced a few times as a unit before Dave took his own life on Feb. 2, 1997. After sustaining the loss of their friend, 23C decided to continue as a 3-piece. Subsequently, Austin put down his beloved guitar and moved to bass.
Myriads of practice hours later, the band entered the studio and recorded 8 tracks, 6 of which ended up on the MISERY AMPHETAMINE DEMO. This rare cassette contained 4 tracks which were never re-recorded or released. Of the remaining four tracks, 3 appeared on the first 7" EP. The last remaining track_WEST WING FOUR was re-recorded and released on the third ep.
Following the release of the first EP, the band began playing out like mad and eventually relocated from Bloomington to Dayton, Ohio. Shortly thereafter, T.D. Means was added on vocals and the band recorded 3 tracks for the ASTRINGENT MASK 7" (MOO COW). Following a US tour and recording 2 tracks for the FMD/23C split 7" (TAMERLANE RECORDS), Collin Snyder left the band.
After a brief moment of hysteria, JIMMY MAGNUSSON (RUNE, KENOMA) stepped in to assume the role of drummer. The band immediately conducted a mini-tour to accustom Jimmy to the road and then came home to begin polishing material slated for the LP: AN EDEN FOR THE MACHINES.
Shortly after recording the LP, the long debated topic of adding a second guitarist was quelled by adding ANDY STRICKLAND (SOUL COMPOST, SCUMCHRIST) of AKRON, OH to the band. After a crash course in 23C, the band set on another tour. Despite some serious infighting (which ultimately resulted in the demise of the band as most knew it), 23C had an amazing tour and played with an array of awesome bands.
After 23C returned home, personal and political leanings forced the band to split. Austin and Jimmy in one camp, Andy in the middle, and Terry and Frank in the other. Unable to compromise, Austin and Jimmy left. Unwilling to pick sides, Andy left also. Terry and Frank kept the band alive by adding the percussion of BRIAN HARRIS (DECAY, MY OWN VICTIM) and bass talents of the sickly LOU GEHRIG. This line-up wrote 9 new songs (four of which were slated for a split LP with PHOBIA) and even managed to play a show in Spring '00. Unfortunately, the momentum which defined the band from 96-99 was lost. Frank's decision to leave Dayton in Sept. '00 thus signified the pages of the TWENTY THIRD CHAPTER closed._____________________________________________________
