Fun is focus of Salem graduation
By Tony Dutzik
Eagle-Tribune Writer
SALEM -- Dark gray clouds loomed overhead, but the mood was bright as the 390 members of the Salem High Class of 2000 received their diplomas last night at Grant Field.
Graduates paraded across the stage like models on a runway, striking poses, flashing salutes to parents and fellow students, and mugging for the school photographer.
Alleem A. Humber Jr. grins as he walks back to his seat with his diploma at Salem High's graduation ceremony.
Even the student speakers put a light touch on the end of their high school careers.
Valedictorian Allison R. Radziwill, who captained the varsity cheerleading squad, told her fellow graduates how working hard and making the right choices could overcome negative stereotypes. Miss Radziwill said Principal R. Patrick Corbin had suggested she mention in her speech "how cheerleaders are not always thought of as the brightest bunch."
"Not only am I a cheerleader," said Miss Radziwill, who was a member of the National Honor Society for three years, "I'm a blonde, Polish cheerleader."
Class essayist Jennifer A. Bourque focused her remarks on the things she would not miss about high school -- such as coming to school at 7 a.m. and "being asked why I'm in the hall every three minutes."
"I can't say to anyone on the field or in the stands that these are the best years of our lives," said Miss Bourque, who will attend Boston University in the fall. "I hope that this isn't as good as it gets."
Salutatorian Amy Titcomb paid an offbeat tribute to her parents, thanking them for "not helping at all." By stepping back, she said, they allowed her to make her own decisions and become her own person.
"My personal goal is I want to enjoy life," said Miss Titcomb, who was described by Mr. Corbin as "a constant behind the scenes leader" in the class.
If there was a bittersweet note, it was in the farewell given to Mr. Corbin, who is leaving Salem High to become principal of Nashua High. Student Council President Elizabeth A. Merchant presented Mr. Corbin with a bouquet of flowers on behalf of the class.
"To many, you've been more than just a principal," Miss Merchant said. "It was always comforting to know there was somebody in the building you could talk to."
After receiving a standing ovation from the graduates, Mr. Corbin thanked the Class of 2000 for "making my last year at Salem High a memorable one."
A message from Kim Arvanitis: Just wanted to inform about my brother Nicholas Arvanitis (SHS class of 2003) was killed by small arms fire in Iraq on October 5th (his 22 birthday) while on patrol with his unit C company 1-505th PIR, 82nd Airborne Division.
He was a member of the SHS wrestling team and Jazz Band throughout his years there... I am hoping to get this information to everyone before it hits the papers... it is always a better thing to hear it from friends than from the media. For all that have sent their sympathies, I want to say thank you from my family and myself. My brother and I were not only siblings, but best friends and he considered all his friends part of his family. We are going to miss him more than anything else in the world, but most of all I am proud to say he was my brother and that he was a true soldier who was proud of what he was doing.
Bobby Moscillo, Sandi Moscillo's (class of 2000) younger brother - just passed away Tuesday 5/2/06 in his humvee when it drove over an Improvised Explosive Device (IED). He is a 2003 Salem High graduate.
** An IED is usually some form of ordinance that was left over by the old regime and is jerry-rigged, then hidden, by the insurgents to explode when coalition forces drive by.
Kim and Sandy our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

High School "Heroes"
This is the "high school heroes" section where people can suggest members of our class as their "heroes". The other section will be dedicated to those who have touched our lives in special and sentimental ways that we will never forget.
