Tae Kwon Do, hanging out with the kids.
Michelle Pfeiffer. Nobody else, really.
Whatever you like, play it loud. Top five would be:(1) World Party; (2) New Model Army; (3) Shane Faubert (once lead singer for The Cheepskates); (4) Ad Vanderveen (Dutch folk singer); and (5) Willie Nile. **The next five would be:(6) Eric ("Roscoe") Ambel; (7) The Hidden Cameras; (8) Flogging Molly; (9) Sid Griffin (ex-The Long Ryders); and (10) The Men They Couldn't Hang, and side projects. **Honorable mention: Matt Pond PA, Lindsay Buckingham, Michael McDermott, The Waterboys, The Brandos, Brian Setzer (w/o the Orchestra), Julian Cope, The Droogs, Steve Barton (once lead singer of Translator), Beth Hart, Tom Russell, The Saints **Sadly no longer around: The Rainmakers, Army of Lovers, The Triffids, The Del-Lords, The Call, Plan 9, Beat Rodeo (but the solo work of George Usher and Steve Almaas is terrific), Beat Farmers, Danielle Dax **Of course I like them, doesn't everyone: The Who, The Doors, The Eagles, U2 **Icons I worship: Dion, Don and Phil Everly, Todd Rundgren, Michael Brown (of The Left Banke).
Five Easy Pieces, Schindler's List, The Godfather, The Godfather Part 2, Chinatown, Kentucky Fried Movie, Big, The Hand (a weird little animated film about a puppet from Czech filmmaker Jiri Trnka), The Manchurian Candidate. *** Yeah, this list needs work.
Cheers, Hill Street Blues, All in the Family, Get Smart!, Green Acres, The Simpsons, M*A*S*H (first five seasons only), Fawlty Towers, The Bob Newhart Show (as a psychologist), Keeping Up Appearances. *** The obvious series missing is The Sopranos, which was brilliant in the first two seasons. Then we moved to a new home and did not have cable for a while, and ultimately chose not to subscribe to HBO. I imagine it's still a pretty amazing show for television.
To Kill a Mockingbird, does it get any better? Anything written by Bertrand Russell. Any of Robert Caro's stunning biographies. Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, still amazing. Anything by Lord Byron.
I feel the same way. Where have they all gone? Maybe Neil Young would qualify. Warren Buffett deserves some consideration as an all around nice gentleman. I'll go with Sister Helen Prejean, working tirelessly for a cause that involves nothing less than human salvation.
