The multi-talented Canadian MC XYL (pronounced ‘Exile’) is an artist with a unique style that fuses Westcoast Hip-Hop with Asian Dance Pop, a formula that ignites the dance floor and creates a truly multi-cultural party atmosphere. With collaborations involving artists from China, Korea, Japan and India, XYL is creating a new world sound that brings East and West together in perfect musical harmony. Currently based in Beijing, China and Seoul, Korea, XYL draws upon the atmosphere and talent around him to focus his direction and forge a destiny made of big beats and traditional Asian culture.Having released his debut EP, ‘Make Way’, in 2007, XYL is now obsessed with creating multi-lingual tracks that generate strong emotional responses from the listener and have the power to unify cultures through a common love of music and dance. One need look no further than his current batch of releases to understand this fact. ‘Know the Name’, a collaboration with Vancouver-based Punjabi Hip-Hop crew A-Slam, merges a hard-hitting drumline with pounding bass frequencies and majestic Punjabi vocals. ‘Dancefloor’ brings Korean Pop music and seamlessly combines it with XYL’s smooth-as-velvet flow while daring you not to move as a wall of synthesizers unleashes a fast-paced assault on the senses and ‘? (The Dragon)’ draws upon traditional Chinese culture and instills the listener with a sense of ancient power while Kaila So’s soaring vocals recount the legend of the fabled Chinese dragon.Having begun his music career in 2006, XYL first built a strong local following in Vancouver before relocating to Asia in May of 2008 to perfect his craft and reach out to the culture and people who influence him the most. His passion and drive have lead to a number of achievements, including a cover story in ‘????’, a Chinese newspaper, feature interviews with the Channel M news program ‘Mandarin Magazine’ and Chinese Hip-Hop website HipHop.CN and a featured video on Korean site Naver with over 56,000 views. XYL has also opened shows for Canadian Hip-Hop heavyweights Moka Only and Josh Martinez and will be touring the minority regions of China in September 2008 as a model, brand ambassador and performer for European clothing label Strellson.XYL has a new album in the works catering to the massive Asian Dance Pop audience and he has released his first short Kung Fu movie called ‘Path of the Warrior’ in which he directs, stars in and does the soundtrack for. With momentum growing from his expanding fanbase and a sound, image and style to sway the masses, XYL is putting Canadian Hip-Hop on the world map and reaching for the top of the industry.
