Since January 5th, 2002, Hip Hop Vox FM has been powered by phantomvox.com through the University of Puerto Rico's FM radio division, WRTU 89.7 FM San Juan and WRUO 88.3 FM Mayagüez (Radio Universidad de Puerto Rico). The only show on Puerto Rico's FM dial devoted strictly to hip hop in all its facets, Hip Hop Vox FM has been a very positive and well-received addition to Puerto Rico's cultural offerings at large, and to the local hip hop scene specifically; so much so, that the station extended its weekly duration from a half-hour to a whole hour only two months after it began. The show's playlist has included acts from all over the world, from the United States, Canada and London to Spain, France, Japan, Africa, Cuba, Dominican Republic and, of course, Puerto Rico. In addition to their thought-out track list, the hosts have discussed on the show all elements of the hip hop culture -- MC's, DJ's and turntablists, graffiti art and breaking -- and have dedicated many shows to increasing the public's awareness and celebration of social themes, such as how hip hop has addressed race and prejudice, the contributions of women to the culture and music, and the exploration of war and peace in the music, among others. As the first show of its kind in the history of Puerto Rican radio, Hip Hop Vox FM has effectively filled a blank for artists both local and foreign, allowing their artistic endeavors and ideas to gain an exposition in Puerto Rico they were never able to experience before. Among the artists from abroad that have set foot in the station: Fab 5 Freddy, Tony Touch, DJ Enuff, Pop Master Fable and Mr. Wiggles of the Rock Steady Crew, and graffiti artist Cope 2; the hosts have also been able to interview via telephone such seminal figures as Talib Kweli, Royce da 5'9" and Kool Herc. Similarly, local representatives of the culture continually use the show as their promotional vehicle of choice for their music and events.Every Saturday from 5-6pm, Tek 1, Velcro and Gitana go on the air live with the newest tracks, the most cherished throwbacks, and discussions of the themes most relevant to the local hip hop scene; all in attempts to fulfill the show's motto: Fomenta la Cultura ("Foment the culture").And now you can listen to the programming online at www.wrtu.pr.
