Influences:i have so many influences .... some have influenced me musically and some in other ways.Musically it started with my parents old record collection ..which i stumbled upon when i was about 8 or 9....i can remember being intrigued by Meat Loaf's 'Bat out of Hell' album cover.
I remember listening to Fleetwood Macs 'Rumors' album over and over and even memorizing Jimi Hendrix's 'All along the Watchtower' and Steppenwolfs 'The Pusher' from the Easy Rider soundtrack.
From there....
I use to head to chelsea records in Porirua centre and spend my pocket money on Jimi Hendrix,Sugar Hill Gang,Malcom Maclaren,Kurtis Blow,Grand Master Flash,Cameo,Sly n Robbie,Anita Baker,Luther Vandross,New Edition,Roberta Flack,Billy Ocean,Motown Classics-Marvin-Smoky-Temptations-Otis-Diana-Jackson 5-etc,P-Funk,Marcus Miller,Tears for Fears,
David Sanborn,Weather Report,John Schofield...
Then when i was 14 i came across Roy Buchanan, i had long fantasized of one day becoming a famous guitar player but it was'nt until i first heard Roy Buchanan that i started to take my guitar plaing seriously.
I had never heard anyone play with so much passion. He could make his guitar scream with pain and cry in sorrow, and seconds later he could play a phrase that could bring the sun out in a Wellington storm.
At the same time i was discovering Jimi Hendrix and Steppenwolf i started to hear this new type of music.i had never heard anything like it...and it was everywhere Grandmaster Flash, Sugarhill Gang,Whodini,Kurtis Blow to Ice T,LL Cool J and Kool Moe Dee to Big Daddy Kane,Kool G Rap,and Rakim to N.W.A and The Ghetto Boys to Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul.....these artists formed the soundtrack to my youth growing up in Porirua.HipHop culture hit us like a Tsunami...and as the culture of a dissaffected youth we were spellbound by it.The music, art, dance, style we took to it like it had always been there...
and to this day i feel the same.
HipHop is a huge part of my life and i often wonder where i would have ended up without it.
From building a 10ft aerial when i was 12 so i could listen to the Wed Nite Jam when i was a kid...listening in for the latest Ksolo,EPMD or Rakim joints .. to now ...i feel blessed to be an Mcee , to be given this gift ...Anyway so thats how i got here..
Toomuch.
