Who would have thought a childhood celebrity crush would actually amount to something? Yeah that's right, my teenage obsession for the gorgeous front man of Bush, Gavin Rossdale, actually gave my life direction. I loved his band and his music and had to have everything made with his face on it, t-shirts, buttons, posters and a book from their first tour 16-stone. The photographer Peter Black captured amazing documentary photographs in B&W of their live shows and everything else that happened behind the scenes.
I immediately fell in love with the idea of music photography. I mean how awesome would it be to follow gorgeous talented boys around the world? But I quickly and sadly learned that my awesome dream job was a lot harder to make a reality that I had thought.
After bouncing around to different colleges I eventually graduated from a community college with an AA degree in photography. My Gemini ways of changing gears drew me to public relations and journalism, so I pressed on with college and I received my B.S. degree in public relations and Journalism. Even though I wasn't majoring in photography, I always found ways to keep shooting while I was in journalism school. I became a staff photographer at the student newspaper and really started to miss doing photography full time.
In 2002 my sister and I partnered up to start our own online publication Static Noise (www.staticnoise.net). Having my own publication was the easiest and best way to gain access and photo passes for concerts. I know you all thought it was my knee pads and boobs that got me that access didn't you?
Through Static Noise my photography and friendships grew.
In Nov. 2003 I won the Ritz Camera contest with a photo of Ryan Jordan from a band called Greenwheel. I won the Grand Prize of the black and white section and two thousand dollars!
That day was a turning point in my life and gave me the confidence that I needed to make it in this industry.
I am looking forward to the day I am doing a photo shoot with Gavin and get to tell him I have loved his music since I was 14 and that his music and his photographer friend Peter Black inspired one of my life's dreams.
