Equinox, a History:
The idea of Equinox was originally conceived as a blend of ideas from guitarists Warren Holmes and Guy Turnbull and a friend of theirs Antony Rodgers. After a few jam sessions the three decided to start up a prog rock band, drawing influences from their favourite artists at the time. The starting line-up consisted of Guy and Warren on guitars and Antony on Saxophone. However these instruments alone were not enough to form a band and so the next member to join was keyboardist Erim Ahmet, a friend of Antony who met the other members at a gig in London.
The first jam sessions conjured up some cool concept ideas and a couple of songs (which may be retouched apon in the future). After 2 sessions round Guys and the first of many round Erims the band brought in a friend of Antony’s, Matt Murphy on bass, sadly though the band had to lose a member, with Guy going off to university up north. The band continued never the less with Antwon picking up the guitar and actually learning it very quickly. It was during this period that the band wrote their 2 'staple' songs that quickly became set favourites: Medusa and Joseph Merrick:The Elephant Man.
With Warren handling vocal duties all that was needed now was a drummer, enter Matt's brother Dan who was a guitarist first and foremost but actually quite a good drummer who picked things up rather quickly. So with the band completed a small, very basic demo was made and via local rock/metal promtors Rock Matrix the band landed their first gig supporting Luntara and The Voice at Barnhurst golf course.
After Barnhurst the band set about writing some new material which turned into 'The Dreams that we must face parts I-IV' and 'Homecoming'. It was felt at this point that the band needed to get a lead singer in as Warren’s voice wasn't powerful enough for the music. So in stepped Kellie Burrell, she picked up the songs quickly and with a good singer the band was ready for their next gig. At this time Guy set up the bands Myspace in an attempt to spread the word.
The band soon got their second gig in July once again via Rock Matrix in their 'Metal up 'ya day' at the Bull and Vic in Dartford, a charity event for one of its workers, Antony sadly couldn't make it so Guy stepped in temporarily playing Antony's guitar lines. The gig was awesome, the band made new friends from other bands, got more good feed back. For the band it felt right; it felt comfortable and finally complete. Sadly the line-up was not to last as Kellie shortly had to leave due to work commitments.
The hunt was on again for another lead singer as the band new that it gave their live performances an edge. As the search for a singer continued some new material was written: 'El Norra Alila:The Plauge Mantra' and ‘Psychotic Waltz'. The band auditioned 2 guys; Paul Engymus and Ben White, both had awesome voices and to be truthful it was a hard choice but the job fell to Ben. So with Ben on board the quest was over.
Ben fitted the mould perfectly, was he was committed and worked really hard contributing lyrics for 'Pyschotic Waltz' and picked up the songs surprisingly fast. The band once again landed a gig at the Bull and Vic on the 11th of december 2006. This was their first headlining gig and the band rose to the challenge. With 120 people coming to see the band after only their 3rd gig the lads thrived off the audience's vibe. It seemed that Ben did indeed fill the gap of singer and fed of the audience.
After the success of the gig the band set to work tightening their sound and working on some more material. The band are always searching for gigs and revel in the live scene.
