Remember the era when female’s straight dominated the rap game? You don’t? That’s probably because it’s never happened. There was a time, however, when women were at least recognized and respected for being great lyricists. Now, women feel they need to take off their clothes, pose for lingerie shots, and rap about sex in order to be recognized. To some extent that is true, women aren’t being given the credit that they are due but that doesn’t mean to lower their standards which is part of the reason women are lacking in the hip-hop game.
Twenty-one year old Alexandria “Deviouz†Williams is trying to bring the female rap game back to the time when lyrics were just as important as the beat and chorus. Back to when females didn’t need to strip to be noticed. She wants to give back to her community and be the role model that young girls need in a female rapstress. Most importantly, she wants to bring what most females lack in the game; Consistency! Although rapping is new to her, the game isn’t. Growing up listening to Biggie, Tupac, Jay-Z, Nas, and her favorite artist 50 Cent from the male side, she was also able to witness a good group of female rap artists. This group included MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, Salt ‘N’ Peppa, Left Eye from TLC, Lil Kim, Foxy Brown, and her favorite female artist Eve. She wants young girls to be able to look up to some female artists in the game right now which isn’t as likely as it was years ago. Look around, who can young girls actually look up to in the female rap game? It wasn’t until high school that Deviouz began to write rhymes over industry beats and was told she was actually pretty good. She didn’t begin taking rap seriously until she injured her knee playing college basketball. The name “Deviouz†was given to her by a close friend because of her personality. First impressions aren’t always the right ones and this is more than true with Deviouz. She comes off as very sweet and innocent and is usually taken lightly because of people’s perception of Long Island. Spend some time with her however, and you will find out that’s not the case at all. She is very diverse and you never know what to expect from her. It’s time to bring female emcees to the forefront, starting with Deviouz.
As far as upcoming events and plans for her future, everything looks very promising. She currently just released her first mixtape called “Deviant Behavior†hosted by DJ Absolut of Hot 97 because her fan base (which is growing quickly) was requesting a mixtape for the streets. As far as future plans, she is prepared to leave her mark in the industry as one of, if not, the best female rapper in the game. She plans on eventually having the greatest rap album from a female of all time. She also plans to be the first female emcee to release a double album or back to back albums in one year. It definitely won’t be hard for her because of her tremendous work ethic. When it comes to acting, she plans on eventually taking acting classes after her music career is established. She has her standards set high and there is no reason she shouldn’t have the bar set high. She is looking to not only be a great artist, but also do what few women in the entertainment business have done. She is going to be an intelligent business woman and be compared to the likes of Diddy, 50 Cent, and Jay-Z. Nothing but greatness is in the future for this young and talented rapper/actress, all that she is missing is the opportunity. Remember the name Deviouz because you will be seeing a lot of it.
