Melonious Funk

About Me

Melonious Funk is a young, dynamic and undeniably refreshing group set to take a celebrated stand in modern jazz.Three years from their birth the band's music has matured far beyond their years with a highly professional and motivated attitude dedicated to spreading their distinctive sound far and wide. The five piece spent their teenage years performing to wide ranging audiences, beginning with those enriching gigs where the sound man doubled as a waiter, rising to present day, where this summer alone they've appeared at a string of festivals including Cheltenham, Manchester and Plymouth jazz festivals with a unanimously positive response. They are blessed with the bond of a family unit, humble but hilarious stage banter and an ability to radiate their fun loving yet often foot tapping performance through the toughest of crowds.Having built a strong name for themselves in the South West, the band are moving across the country as they begin their time at Conservatoires and Universities, furthering their compositional and performance skills both individually and as a band. Tipped for the top by artists and audiences alike Melonious Funk is set to move only from strength to strength and to a venue near you.FOR BOOKING INFORMATION PLEASE E-MAIL - [email protected] is a snippit of us performing spain at the Phoenix Centre in Exeter.

My Interests

Music:

Band Website: www.myspace.com/meloniousfunk1
Band Members: On horns we have: Patrick Friel on Trombone, Ben Lowman on Sax. Keeping the groove smooth we have: Adam West on Guitar, Nicky Pilkington on Bass, and last but not least Holly Madge on Drums.
Influences: Influences Include:Freddy Hubbard / Wes Montgomery / Herbie Hancock / Weather Report / Brecker Brothers / Dr John / Maceo Parker / Candy Dulfer / George Clinton and Parliment Fankadellic / Soullive / Tower of Power / Tim Carter / Holly Madge / Ben Lowman / Nicky Pilkington / Toby Smith / Patrick Friel / 70's Funk & Disco/ Dave Weckl / Pat Metheny / John scofield / John Mclaughlin / Thelonious Monk / Victor Wooten / Marcus Miller / Errol Garner
Sounds Like: Well Jazz-Funk-Latin with a contemporary twist. As its individual members have progressed, a more comfortable, improvisatory feel has come to the forefront of our performance, though tight arrangements and structures remain in place. Repetoire is varied, and live tangents of extended drum/bass solos, distorted guitar features or unacompanied horn solos are not unheard of!
