Being light skinned and "Moreno" has been a metaphor that defines his contrasting diversity as an artist. Moreno is American born in Miami, Florida to Cuban immigrants who came to the U.S. as children in 1958. Their love for Rock and Roll and the sound of the Classic Latin crooners instilled in him a mixture of both the American and Latin cultures. In his family no one actually played an instrument, sang or wrote music but still, he grew up with music all around him. His father, Tony Moreno, worked his way up from sweeping the floors at a small local Latin record label to running it by the end of his second year there. Soon thereafter he headed TH Records one of the largest Latin labels that fed the world their Salsa fix. Moreno remembers going to recording sessions with his father when he was a kid and hanging out with artists at a concert or taking pictures after a show. He was hooked. While he was getting a taste of show business in Tropical music with his dad, He was also learning about Elvis, The Beatles, 70s and 80s rock at home from his mother. Then he would spend his days after school at his Grandmothers record store in Hialeah, a very Latin suburb of Miami listening to the likes of Beny More' and La Sonora Matancera. During high school he started to take music a little more seriously than just singing in the shower and started his first band. Naturally, he did what any good son who’s father was in the Latin music business would do. He started a Depeche Mode-esc goth band. "Looking back I feel I was very green and plenty naïve." After much experimentation with latin music I caught the Latin Music bug but felt more Rock and Roll and struggled to make a connection. Then I channeled one of my parents’ old Salsa records “Siembra” by Ruben Blades. Blades used American influenced story lines in Salsa, funk, rock etc… I then decided it was possible to mix both worlds and began to try and do just that." After five years of making demos, finally, In 2002 EMI Music Publishing signed him as a songwriter, then the same year his music caught the ear of Madonna, who signed him as the first Latin artist to her then new Latin division of Maverick. Suddenly Moreno found himself working with Latin pop’s top producers Lester Mendez, A.T. Molina and Andres Levin. Moreno's first album using his full name “Jorge Moreno” (at Mavericks request) launched him into a sea of press and critical acclaim. His performances ranging from “Good Morning America” to it's Latin equivalent “Despierta America.” CBS specials like the "I Love Lucy 50th Anniversary" and “One World Jam” at Radio City Music hall and then a Latin Grammy Nomination for “Best New Artist” which he later won. The following year he was also nominated for “Best Latin Pop Album” in the Anglo Grammy’s. In early 2005, Moreno was contacted by Clive Davis’ office (Jrecords) and The Carlos Santana camp to sing the opening track for the movie “Havana Nights” called “Satellite” which was written by Santana and Rob Thomas (Matchbox 20). In 2006 Moreno released “El Segundo” (Spanish for "The Second") which received great reviews and toured the college circuit all over the U.S. building a diverse fan base. Now Moreno comes back with his third release, Due to release in March 09. This third record is Morenos most abitious and entertaining. Since Morenos roaring rendition of Babalu off his debut album and Moreno's widely known flare of everything "retro" from clothes, cars to his sound. On this album, Moreno has gone thru thousands of tracks from the 1950's from some of Cuba's biggest stars to compile and create his own playlist. The tracks Moreno has selected are either covers or he builds lyrics and adds instrumentation over the original instrumental tracks and makes them his own. This is a industry first in any genre and Moreno once again is breaking the mold.
