About Me

When Cameron arrived here, even the most basic categories of biology were still up for grabs; it was hard to know just where one form of life began and another ended. The scholars of the Royal Academy had only recently managed to stamp out the reports of a plant in China whose pods, when ripened, broke open to reveal barnacle geese. In a slippery world full of strange metamorphoses, who was to say just where the animal realm ended and the human began? The one question on everyone's minds after he was discovered was: who was he? But over time, a much more unsettling one took shape. What was he? It never took much to feed him, really: The most remarkable feature of his diet was that he ate little and simply, taking his greatest joy in raw cabbage leaves and onions, and drank enormous quantities of water. The wild boy's body was almost supernaturally powerful on this diet, so much so that local boys dared not tease him. Fortunately for them, he was very slow to anger. Bullying would not have achieved much anyway: you could not make him do anything. The simplest requests went unheard. Yet when left alone Cameron would unexpectedly join the people at laboring and do the work of three men. To explain the error to Cameron was useless as asking him to do the task in the first place. He could hear, but he didn't listen. In fact, he could hear very well: he was passionately fond of music and would clap and stamp his feet until ready to drop from exhaustion; long afterward, he could be heard humming tunes over and over until he'd got them right
