I am a guitar and music tutor. I teach at Spires Academy and Aycliffe Primary in Kent. I teach one - to - one and small group guitar lessons, with a structured course, and can teach curriculums for internationally recognised examinations in acoustic, electric and bass guitar. I focus on practical music making and the skills needed to play in a band, making sure the pupils can also learn at home, with course handouts, which specialise in music theory, rhythm playing, acoustic, electric and lead guitar, as well as improvisation, sight reading, classical and bass guitar.
As well as teaching guitar, I am currently involved with ensemble and solo live performance. I have also run work shops, with Pie Factory Music’s Rock School, in association with Christ Church University, developing children’s performance skills, focusing predominantly, but not exclusively, on popular music styles.
BEGINNERS
After the first lesson, a beginner learns how to hold the guitar properly, the names of the strings, how to tune a guitar, some open chords (usually three: A, D and E), the correct fingering to use, how to change chords, how to read chord diagrams, a basic 4/4 rhythm and understanding bars and repeat dots. My method is to teach through a popular song; so I teach them a song, using the chords they have just learnt, so repeat dots and a basic song structure is perfectly clear to them. Each lesson the pupil improves, with practice, learning other chords, bar chords and some basic notation.
THEORY
For acoustic guitar players, with already a good knowledge of chords, I teach all the different types of chord (major, minor, major 6ths etc) and the different ways of playing them. e.g. in the first lesson they learn what makes up a major chord and five different ways of how to play one: root in the bass, first link, third in the bass, fifth in the bass and second link. They understand how to find these chords on the fret board, by knowing where the root, third and fifth are. This is taught with each chord and the pupil sees how they all relate to each other, and that knowing this theory, they will be able to play any chord in any position.
MUSIC READING
For pupils who wish to learn how to read music through the guitar, or how to play the guitar through reading music, I use “Solo Guitar Playing” by Frederick M. Noad. I teach this in a classical way, so pupils can learn the correct fingering and style.
ELECTRIC/LEAD GUITAR
I teach all scales and arpeggios etc. I start by teaching pentatonic scales and then major scales. I use “Blues Lead Guitar Method” by Petter Gelling for Pentatonic Scales. I teach correct fingering, how to read guitar tablature, how to read music to relate to the tab. My pupils learn each position of the minor pentatonic scale, per lesson, with riffs and licks within this, with reference to a popular song or guitar solo.
