About Me

All songs on T. Kinakin's Myspace are written and performed by Terry. Blending a bit of the past (think swing of the 30s & 40s), with a touch of the future (jazz progression), a dash of humor, a splash of sophistication (intricate arrangements), and large amounts of originality (in composition and performance), Kinakin has created a very tasty feast for the ears. This project is representative of the musical friends and genres that have left their fingerprints on my writing and playing, Kinakin commented. I came from a traditional New Orleans jazz background, and worked my way through the Django swing styles all the way to bluegrass and blues. Add to that the Grisman and new acoustic jazz influences of today and you get a sense of the journey. A native of Calgary, Alberta, Kinakin started playing Dixieland banjo at the tender age of six. He hit every major stage from Montreal to the shores of British Columbia and gained notoriety as Canadas Foremost Plectrum Banjo Player. His acting and musical comedy talents brought him key roles in summer stock theatre. When love entered the picture, he pulled up his roots and headed south to marry his Wisconsin-bred sweetheart! In Milwaukee, Kinakin split his time between teaching, recording and performing. He played with numerous bands (Dixieland, Country Swing, Folk, Jazz and Bluegrass) and toured throughout the states. This CD had to be birthed, Kinakin said. There were simply too many tunes filling my head and heart. I was writing in the car, the shower (indelible ink), and in the middle of the night. Finally, it was either record or die! Currently Terry is working on his next all original Americana/Bluegrass CD project with producer/guitarist Pat Flynn and bassist John Cowan of the group Newgrass Revival, along with Drummer/Percussionist Cactus Moser, John McEuen( NGDB), Tim O'Brien Fiddle. Due to come out in'09.NEWSPAPER COMMENTS:"It is traditional jazz in its original form and candy for my ears. The vocal is as earthy as an old Decca Al Jolson offering and the rhythm just rolls right along in an uptempo style. Does it have the stuff that will last? Yes, Hell Yes!." ~ Chuck Chellman/President TN Jazz and Blues Society "An original player in a town loaded with dull copycats. Kinakin is Brian Setzer, David Grisman and Jerry Garcia tossed in a blender- a quick fingered ace who blends pop, jazz, bluegrass and blues into a style all his own. His forth coming disc, DREAM I'M WITH YOU, should prove ear candy for the progressive Nashville jazz and swing crowd. He has that rare mix of talent and personality, a soloist who follows the " if it's not fun, why do it?" mentality. Kinakin recieves "Best Soloist of Nashville 2002", Nashville Scene~ Brian Blackwell(Columnist).
