Colonel Reb, the animated sideline mascot for Ole Miss was relieved of his on-field duties for the University in the Fall of 2003. He was the official sporting events representative of the University since the first uniform was designed and created by Disney artists in 1979. Colonel Reb's iconic image was created in 1938--two years after a student vote elected the name, "Rebels" as the Ole Miss mascot. Prior to 1936, Ole Miss's mascot was "The Flood." Prior to having a mascot costume (ca.1940 - 1979), Col. Reb was preceded by a male fraternity member dressed as a confederate soldier-carrying an officer's saber. These gentlemen led the Rebel's on to the gridiron for over three decades. Since Col. Reb's tenure on the field has come to an end, Colonel Reb loyalists have revived his presence in the form of "Colonel Too", who looks strikingly similar to the original Colonel Rebel and many recognize him as a relative of the retired mascot. Colonel Too, while loved by many, is not officially sanctioned or recognized by the University. While the Colonel is gone, his memory lives on . . . (Copied from Olemisscheer.com)
