About Me

Daring to dream: Ratha in a feature film?

Many Ratha series readers have suggested that the series would make a great movie or sequence of movies. It's got big cats, a prehistoric setting, scientific extrapolation, a good story, nifty characters, etc.

There are also a lot of big and little cat-lovers, both kids and adults, who haven't had a really good cat-fantasy movie in a long time.

IF you'd like to help make this happen (you are a film-maker or work in the industry), please contact me via MySpace.

For an idea of Ratha's potential, see the clip below from the 20-minute CBS Storybreak episode made in 1985-87. With today's digital animation technology, such a film could be spectacular. Think of Aslan the Lion from The Chronicles of Narnia.

The Basics About Me:

I write Y/A science fiction/fantasy and am best known for the Ratha series about a clan of prehistoric sentient big cats.

My latest novel is Ratha's Courage, due out in E-Book form from Baen Books/E-Reads website www.baen.com on 4/1/08 and later in print form in 2008.

The first book in the series, Ratha's Creature (1983), appeared as a hardcover from Atheneum-Argo, edited by the legendary Margaret K. McElderry. It received a number of awards, including the International Reading Association's 1983 Children's Choice Award and the PEN Los Angeles Award.

Viking-Penguin is re-issuing Ratha's Creature and its original sequels, Clan Ground, Ratha and Thistle-Chaser, and Ratha's Challenge as paperbacks in the FireBird Books line, edited by Sharyn November.

Sharyn is well-known for her work over the Internet with teenage readers. Even though the Ratha series went out of print, it remained alive in the hearts of many who had read it as teenagers.

It also remained live on the Internet, with Ratha fans setting up websites, doing artwork and emailing each other about the series and the characters. It is because of these folks that I wrote the new Ratha's Courage and Viking is re-issuing the originals.

Other works that I hope will come back into print include Tomorrow's Sphinx (cheetahs and Tutankhamen), People of the Sky (Pueblo Indians, an old DC-3 aircraft, flying creatures, weird biology) and the Jaguar Princess (Olmec were-jaguar woman in Aztec Mexico).

Our not-favorite tabloid not-news network does it again. Don't watch Fox, don't buy from it's advertisers. They shouldn't call it "Fox". I like foxes and this is an insult to a nice critter.

Hey Sarah Palin (with lyrics/subtitles)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DIc8jdra0o Palin would probably throw Ratha's Creature on her library book bonfire. This song really skewers her.
