About Me

I'm a 53 year old guy who is obsessed with music: mostly rock, and many of it's gnarlier roots and branches. I have been involved in the Baltimore area music scene for--yikes!--almost 40 years. I have a vast knowledge of many kinds of music, and wrote music reviews for Baltimore City Paper (and various 'zines) for much of the 90s. I was a store manager for Record and Tape Traders for a dozen years (back when people bought CDs) I live in Hamilton (NE Baltimore). I recently adopted Kylie, an awesome 7-year old, 90 pound Alaskan malamute/shepherd/lab mix.

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

The Woggles at the Black Cat, April 15

The Woggles are the most consistantly rockin' of the many garage bands out there (not a subtle as the Fleshtones, but just as much fun). They are not to be missed, so Jon, Gabi, Debbie and I headed do...

Robyn Hitchcock at Black Cat, April 9

Robyn Hitchcock is one of those quirky, very British artists who coulda/shoulda been a big star in the early 80s, when he released a string of brilliant psych/pop records. But of course he ended up as...

Magic Christian at Velvet Lounge, Jan 26

Is it too early, in late-January, to start thinking about the best show of 2009?  Yeah, it is--but Magic Christian totally demolished DC's little Velvet Lounge last week with a tsunmi of good-time gar...

Garnet Hearts and Hamell at Talking Head, Jan 13

A few weeks ago, Debbie started pestering me to see this hot new local Baltimore rockabilly band she'd been hearing about, the Garnet Hearts.  Debbie loves authentic rockabilly; I like it, but lean mo...

Mondo Topless, Jan 9 at Sidebar

Wow--Mondo Topless have become contenders.  They were always a solid garage-rock combo, but in past I thought they lacked gravitas.  They were good, but not great, especially compared to label-mates a...

The Slickee Boys, Dec 26 at Ottobar

After 32 years in the music biz, the Slickee Boys are on the rise!  They're sounding better than they have in a long time--maybe forever.  Quick history lesson: the Slickee Boys were hatched...

Supersuckers at Ottobar, Dec 6

Can it be?  This is the Supersuckers' 20th anniversary tour.  And I've probably seen them everytime they've played in Baltimore (8x10 back in the day, then the old and new Ottobars; plus a few DC show...

Killdozer at Talking Head, Oct 31

The Who is touring again, so why not Killdozer?  Killdozer crawled out of Wisconsin in 1983, and were one of the gnarliest of the 80s post-punk, pre-grunge bands. I saw them a few times in the la...

Lazlo Lee at Hour Haus, Oct 25

For about a year, Debbie's been raving about this amazing glam-punk band she and Deniz saw at Sidebar: the Hot Pursuit.  However, before I got a chance to check them out, they lost their singer a...

Legendary Shack Shakers at Rock & Roll Hotel, Oct 14

Legendary Shack Shakers haven't hit this neck'o'the woods in a few years (and no Baltimore show this time), so Jon and I headed down to DC on a Tuesday night.  LSS are the best pyschobilly band i...
