About Me
Nick Rosen
INTO THE SKY
April 200923 year old multi-instrumentalist, composer Nick Rosen is on a mission to "inspire joy and hope" the world over, with his unique sound and vision. He's been realizing his musical dreams since he first picked up the electric bass at the age of 13. Now an accomplished upright and electric bassist, guitarist, pianist, and natural at most instruments he takes a liking to, Rosen has completed the enlightening journey of writing, arranging and Executive Producing his debut CD, INTO THE SKY.Before receiving his BFA from California Institute of the Arts, with a double major in classical and jazz bass, in May, 2007, (under the mentorship of Darek Oles, Peter Rofe and Charlie Haden,) Rosen had already been playing around Los Angeles with jazz luminaries such as bassist Henry Grimes, reedsman Bennie Maupin and saxophonist Arthur Blythe, as well as experimental guitarist Nels Cline and multi-instrumentalist Wadada Leo Smith, among many others. He's played in a wide variety of rock, soul and jazz bands since his days at Oakwood High School, (where he is currently a bass teacher,) near his home town of Sherman Oaks, California. All the financing Rosen raised for his incredible soul-folk, orchestral-jazz record came from his work as a professional session player, and band leader. He's been a bassist for the T.V. show FRINGE for the last 2 seasons, and just played on the score to Will Ferrell's feature film, LAND OF THE LOST, for composer Michael Giacchino. Rosen also plays regularly with The Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra, Build An Ark, and other world renowned ensembles based in Los Angeles, including his own group The Nick Rosen Group.Rosen describes his first full-length offering, INTO THE SKY, as being, "a musical celebration of the interconnectedness of all people and places. The songs are by themselves their own universe," he says, "but at the same time they are all connected to the idea of togetherness, and to forming one beautiful, magical entity." On the record Rosen sings on "Winter Into Spring," Mindy's Song" and "For People," and plays guitar, rhodes, upright and electric bass, and synths throughout. He's joined by producer, arranger, multi-instrumentalist Miguel Atwood-Ferguson on piano, violin, viola and upright bass. The two worked on the beautiful arrangements featured flying a top Rosen's original compositions. And together they contracted some of their very talented friends, including French hornist Danielle Ondarza, bassoonist Tara Spieser, clarinetist Jen Stephenson, flautist Katisse Buckingham, vibraphonist Nick Mancini, harpist Rebekah Raff, cellist Peter Jacobson, flugel hornist Dusty McKinney, drummers Dexter Story, Matt Mayhall and Gene Coye, electric guitarist Dave Wood, and vocalist Mia Doi Todd, to help make the album all the more special. With influences ranging from Albert Ayler, Sam Cooke, John Coltrane, and The Beatles to Andy Goldsworthy, Daisaku Ikeda, Maurice Ravel, Horace Tapscott, Jon Brion, and J Dilla, Rosen is well aware that he has to put his heart into everything he does. Above all, while listening to INTO THE SKY, you’re bound to hear just that, heart! And oh, how refreshing that is!Nick Rosen
