About Me

Since its inception in 1995, The Dexter Thomas Band has been performing high-energy shows throughout the South in a wide variety of venues. The band's crowd-satisfying mix of '60's and '70's rock and roll and r&b, and the band's unique blend of talents, have garnered a large following and made the band a popular repeat booking.

The 11-piece band features a dynamic combination of male and female lead vocals, allowing for maximum stylistic diversity. Four members of the band have music degrees. Individual members have performed outside of the band both nationally and internationally.
The band has been a popular attraction at festivals and special events and has opened for such acts as Michael Bolton, Kansas, The Guess Who, Leon Russell and many others. The band has also headlined the Conoco Stage and Covista Stage at the annual Riverbend Festival in Chattanooga, Tennessee numerous times.

Influences:

Playing saxophone, my personal influences come from listening to Grover Washington, Jimmy Heath and Charlie Parker early on. I also began to listen later to David Sanborn, Lenny Picket, Michael Brecker, Marc Russo, Clarence Clemmons and Cornelius Bumpus where I found the phrasing and tonality which has shaped my own style to this day. Without a doubt,
Tony Sutherland has been one of the most influential musicians in my life. Growing up with my brother was like a musical paradise as he was always driven to find himself on the cutting edge stylistically. I always took the lazier approach to learning or creating a song but Tony was consumed with a passion for pushing through it on a daily digest. I'm not sure that enough wore off on me but I'm very passionate just the same for doing things right and being prepared. I can't stand a lack of preparation. There's no excuse for it. Even though Tony is not a sax player, he understands soul music and fashions it extremely well through his intimate songwriting, soothing "take you there" vocals and jamtastic keyboard skills. I simply wouldn't be the same without Tony and his vibe throughout my life. So Tone, "You Da Man! Thanks for poking, prodding and preening!"

Also, my son
Cody has been playing sax for several years and is coming into his own as a great soloist and player. He plays in his high school marching band, concert band, jazz band and now plays sax with me at church every weekend. If I may use the vernacular of today generation, "It is freakin' awesome to be playing and hear Cody playing along with me." It is a dream come true to have him pick up a sax and play it so skillfully. I look for him to be one up on the old man someday but until then I'll keep practicing as always. I can't wait to hear him at each level as he is progressing so quickly.
