Their music has been described as lyrical and soulful, and is a mix of acoustic and electro-acoustic composition, loops and real-time sampling. Their working methods were largely based on the idea that the duo-format could be sonically expanded, and that the roles of each instrument would to some degree extend beyond their stereotypical role. This can best be seen/heard in compositions where the vocals take over a comping role, or where rune through his real-time samples has completely changed the traditional role of the comping guitarist. But it has also been a goal to make these features subtle so that the main focus of the listener is not necessarily drawn away from the beauty of the music itself. While the compositions and the lyrics are at the centre of their expression, improvisation also plays a vital part in their music.
Its not easy placing Sonic Stories in a fixed genre. There are obvious influences from our jazz education and from the contemporary jazz scenes in Norway and Europe. But there are also strong influences from pop music, as are the influences from contemporary music and art music. Sonic Stories has enjoyed great success at festivals such as Nattjazz and Vossa Jazz.
Their first album was released on Vossajazz Records in 2006.
Sonic Stories has since 2008 branched into a new, parallel project, the Sonic Sories Orchestra. This is a 9-piece band comprising musicians based in Oslo, Norway as well as musicians who are part of the LIMA collective in Leeds, UK. The orchestra perform a lot of new material as well as some of the duo material in new ways. The Sonic Stories Orchestra had their debut gig at the LIMA festival in October 2008, and followed up with some gigs in Norway in April 2009, the highlight being a festival gig at VossaJazz. We hope to be touring and recording further with this project in early 2010.
